RollerCoaster Tycoon 2
Question from MetallicaR0ck
Asked on: 12/18 3:40AMI have tried to build bigger/more paths, but they never work. I get to year 3 on one level with 800 as my park rating, then everyone says it's too overcrowded and it drops to 10!
As far as overcrowding is concerned, the biggest mistake you can make is building exits and quene entrances to multiple rides within close proximity to each other, or building exits to large rides in areas that have already been developed. The reason for that is because when a roller coaster train pulls into the station, 28-32 people will be exiting into that area at the exact same time. For instance, if you have a path with a Merry go round and hot dog stand on it that's fine, but if you build a new roller coaster next to that path, and choose to utilize that path for the exit (meaning building the exit on an open square of land next to the path or a couple squares back) you will have these surges of people every minute getting in the way of those who want a hot dog. The best way to avoid that is to either build new coasters way out by themselves, or create a winding exit, if you can build a coasters exit 3-4 squares back from where you want the exit path to let out to, winding the exit back and forth for a short distance will allow the people who walk at different speeds to seperate.
Let me just say that I also don't think overcrowding caused your rating to drop, I've been playing this game since it came out and overcrowding has never been a problem as far as park ratings are concerened, the only exception to that though is long lines. Lines over 7-8 minutes do cause some upset guests to leave the line, thus hurting your rating.
The most common problems:
Dirty Paths
Lack of Food/Drinks/Restrooms in a big area
Long lines
Lack of suitable attractions for certain guests (thrill/gentle)
Guests getting lost or stuck--this could be a fatal flaw of what you are doing, building wide paths can sometimes cause confusion, and it won't help a thing. Single file paths are fine.

statusOvercrowding has nothing to do with how your park rating dropped so much. Chances are that there are other problems in your park as well.
Overcrowding will happen, but you should only try to minimize it, not completely get rid of it. As long as you expand your park out, the overcrowding would decrease and it wouldn't be so much of a problem later on.
Something that i find works for me if you can afford it create sidewalk with more width. also creating little area for food and rest throughout the park. like six flags has area for food and rest away from the main rides.
Just spread the rides in you park out a bit....that usually helps. If not, then expand your park.
Bring up the Guest Thoughts window, find the list of guests who are thinking "It's too crowded here!" and click the map icon to find out where the congestion is. If there's space, you can build a "byway" path to create an alternate route from one end of it to the other. You might also try moving ride exits that dump there elsewhere, and bringing the entrance lines of popular rides to the problem area.
