What changes does advancing to a new era have?

When you have the option to research a new technology, and it says that "this will advance you to the classical era" or another era, what effect on the rest of the game does advancing to a new era have?

Is there any advantage to era leaping, like using the Oracle to leap from the ancient to midevil era?

There is no advantage to "era leaping", so to speak. Aside from aesthetic effects (the graphics of your cities change, the background music changes), there is no in-game effect. The "eras" are just there for flavor.
