status"Survey" as in "anomaly reseach"? You need a research module, which is a pretty advanced and expensive item. Unless you really rush the research tree, you will run out of anomalies by the time you get it.

You need to research the first tech in the Sensors line. It is quite easy to get to this in the first few turns, in fact many top players include a survey ship spam as part of their beginning strategy.
