Doom
Review by dgiglio84
""Lost it's touch"....what was I thinking?"
When I first reviewed this game I said it was a first person shooter that ''lost it's touch''...man, what was I thinking? I recently played Doom again and forgot how awesome it is...
Doom is a first person shooter game and is still enjoyable to play, but compared to other first person shooters, it lost it's touch. Doom is the game that started the first person shooter games craze. Taking elements from previous first person shooters, such as Wolfenstein and Blake Stone, Doom is one great game to play.
The graphics were excellent when this game first came out, now they are ''been there, done that'' graphics. They still aren't that bad. The 3d was done excellent in this game, but the characters are 2-d. The explosions look nice, too. All and all, the graphics are very detailed for it's time, and it's easy to distinguish what's what on the screen (which is all that matters).
The gameplay is simple: get to the end of the level without getting killed...of course, there are tons of enemies, traps, and puzzles you have to get by first and doing that is sometimes very difficult. There are also three different episodes, each one with different levels. Episode one is called ''Knee Deep in the Dead''. Episode two is called ''The Shores of Hell''. Episode three is the hardest of them all. It is called ''Inferno'' (I love the names of these).
It's pretty easy to control your character. All you have to do is run, shoot, open, and strafe. There's no way to look up or down, jump, duck, aim...etc.... Shooting enemies is pretty easy, too. All you have to do is shoot in the direction that the enemy is in. Even if the enemy is not on the same floor as you are, you still hit it.
The enemy sound effects are great, and so are the sounds of the guns. The music in the game is very catchy, and it goes along with the level's title.
As for replay, you'll probably want to play this game over on a new difficulty level (there are four in all, the fourth one is insanely difficult.) There is PLENTY of action to keep you busy!
If you haven't played Doom yet, you don't know what you're missing. Find the shareware version of Doom somewhere on the net. If you like classic games, you'll like Doom.
I gave Doom a 10 for it's great gameplay, sounds, and graphics.
