Maniac Mansion: Day of the Tentacle

Review by Exodist

"LucasArts are getting pretty good at SCUMM games now, this one is just too awesome."

Finally. A sequel to a SCUMM game. There aren't many. Monkey Island got 3 sequels, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade got a sequel, Full Throttle and Sam and Max sequels were cancelled. Not very good with them are they. But Maniac Mansion got one. And it was a bloody good one too. It wasn't a disappointment, where it was basically the same as the last one. A lot of things have changed.

Graphics - 10/10

Pretty good for 1993 in my opinion. Pixels are visible, but its then, it was acceptable. Maniac Mansion goes for the cartoony style, and it does it well. It looks like it, and it suits the game very much with its slap stick humour. The animations are good too, so really, the graphics are best seen on a SCUMM game before this.

Sound - 9/10

There isn't really a theme for Maniac Mansion, it just plays some really quiet music at you. But still, its pretty good, and never dull, boring, or that bad you turn your sound down to escape it. The sound effects are good, but pretty loud. I picked up an item, and this loud WHOOSH sound effect sounded, but that doesn't really matter that much, its not as bad as the fire alarm in The Sims 2.

Gameplay - 10/10

The game play is perfect. This really is that great a game. You control three different characters, around the same mansion. But heres the twist, one of them is in the past, another present, and the last one in the future. They must send each other items to help one another escape from this place, its quite interesting too. Like, in the present, if you put a hamster inside an ice box, open it in the future, and guess what, you get a frozen hamster. It's really cool, and it makes the game more interesting, clever, and funny. It's really funny too, it has slap stick humour in it, but there is one bad point. It's really short. Not as short as Loom, but nearly. Good thing you can play the original, full version of Maniac Mansion in this game, by using a PC in the present. Now that is cool!

Overall - 10/10

With a good story, graphics, sound, and game play, its really really good. It's a bit on the short side, but its got Maniac Mansion to keep you playing even longer, which is pretty good. Combine two great games and you have one hell of a package, its that good. You need to play this game, its just so awesome. Well worth the money.
