Nibiru: Age of Secrets
Review by itoilet9
"Few problems. Great point-and-click adventure."
When I picked up this game and threw it in the computer, I honestly thought it wasn't going to make it past the door in terms of immersive gameplay. Gladly, I was wrong. For those who haven't played, Nibiru is much like Escape from Monkey Island. It is a simple point-and-click adventure, and will please people in both gameplay, graphics, and story.
You play as Martin Nolan, who is attempting to find out the secrets of a project called Ni.Bi.Ru which was done by the Germans near the end of WWII. Going any further than that would be a spoiler. The story is full of plot twists, and it definitely has a few horror moments.
Intro aside, lets get to the bad stuff first.
The one thing I noticed, is the subtitles. They don't match what people say in-game a bit too often. A few times may have been forgivable, but it happens too many times. Sometimes you see "apartments" spelt "appartments". And if someone says "I guess..." for example, the game might say "I guess,,,". Needless to say, the game's subtitles needed a bit more work.
The other thing: The accents of the people speaking to you. Some of them sound good, some of them sound a little cheesy. The main character sounds a tad off at certain moments as well. The one thing I didn't like is the fact that the main character talks to himself too much. While some won't mind this. I kind of do.
While I don't have a problem with this, some of the puzzles are very indirect. You have to REALLY pay attention to detail in order to get by in this game. For example, if you see a picture of a plant next to a computer that requires a password, for all you know, the password could be "plant". And if the plant is turned over, it might mean to type the password backwards.
Lastly, on a mid-grade computer, load times are nigh unbearable. It took up to one minute to load for me at certain parts of the game. As with most games, more CPU speed, RAM and Video card power definitely help here.
Now the good stuff:
Graphics. If you played Final Fantasy 8 or 9, you know that you control a three-dimensional character on a background. This game is no different. Your character is three-dimensional on a vibrant background. Unfortunately, I had to play with Antialiasing OFF, but it still looked awesome.
The sound: We have the usual lineup of sound effects, environmental sounds, and voices. I spoke about voices in the previous section. The sound effects sound pretty realistic, and the environmental sounds make you feel as if you are really in the game.
Controls: The controls are extremely basic, after all, it is a point and click game. Sometimes the right and left-click may confuse you, but still, it is pretty simple for a game of today. Requires little to no keyboard interaction.
My final verdict: If you are a diehard point-and-click fan, and like an immersive story, and you are pleased by sound effects and graphics, go buy this game. It feels like a truly three-dimensional Escape from Monkey Island.
