Quake

Review by Raddish_Forever

"Another Masterpiece that iD Software has constructed"

Quake is a new shooting series from the people at iD Software. They are the founding father's of the First Person shooter and they are back once again with a whole new series. The Quake Series.

Story: This game basically is a story about this Mutant Invasion that go by the name 'Stroggs'. They invade several interspaced military installations and it's up to you to destroy them. These game's (shooters) are never too heavy on story, but this one is actually pretty interesting. (6)

Gameplay: Quake is a very basic game, but it was a big deal for what would follow. Quake runs on a full scale 3D environment with all polygons blazing. The game itself isn't half bad, but it needs work. The game's levels are all very demonic looking and have a very gothic mix hi-tech look to them. It's nice, but I've seen much better. Most of the weapons from DOOM are actually redone for Quake which is awesome. You got your Shotgun and super shotgun, even the BFG, but what's cooler is that they made ones just for Quake. Things like a Nail gun and a big old' Lighting gun. These are all point shoot style guns, which is just fine, but again, this game at this day and age is just dull, and that's a given. (7)

Audio: Quake is actually pretty creepy, even more so than it's evil brother, Doom. Odd noises flood the halls, and I have at times heard a whisper or two! The sound is fantastic as ever. That and the weapons sound pretty good as well. The game holds here pretty well even after all the years that have elapsed over it. (8)

Visuals: Now, Quake was an important link to the future for one major reason. Full three dimensional gameplay. that includes the ability to use a X and Y axis while aiming and the opponents are mapped by polygons, instead of 2D sprites. This all looks very well, but is grainy and not as cool as the 2D look. Nonetheless every thing else looks in check. The levels are very well built and the enemies look just as great as the weapons do. It appears to be just fine. Even when I played in 1996, it will not matter in the end. (7)

This is a major mark on the First person shooter timeline. If you even remotely enjoyed doom, you must find a copy of Quake!

Overall: (8)
