Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory

Review by JonWood007

"Good Free Game"

Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is a great free game made by ID.

Graphics- 10/10

My standards with graphics for PC games are low, mainly because my graphics card is terrible, but for my PC the graphics are great. The game has the graphics of the average Dreamcast game, which to a good PC is decent, but nothing special. The models look a little fake, but the overall it's decent.

Audio- 8/10

This game has no in game music although music outside of the actually game play (the title screen and the end of rounds) is awesome. The sound effects are also pretty good.

Controls- 9/10

Since this game is a bit complicated, the controls are a bit complicated. The standard functions like shooting are fine for the most part. However, sniping is a problem, at least for me. There are also many functions in this game that do not involve shooting, but most of them can be accessed by scrolling through your weapon inventory.

Game Play- 18/20

The game play is fine for the most part. Enemy Territory is a first person shooter where people fight on either the allied or axis side. The objectives of the game vary depending on the team you are on and the map. These objectives can range from stealing Nazi gold to defending a fuel dump from being blown up. However, the game can be very complex and is not just another "kill everything that moves" shooter. This game require strategy and teamwork to get the job done. Despite the complexities, the game is good.

Fun Factor- 15/20

This score is an average of two different attitudes that I have had toward this game. When I first started, I got frustrated with this game because it was so complicated. I had no idea what was going on because the game was extremely complicated. Shooting people would not win missions. I would have to perform tasks like setting bombs and stuff to win, and I was completely oblivious to the objective of the game. Also, people who were far more experienced than me would know exactly what to do while the newer players were left in the dark. The fun factor would have been 12/20. However, as I started playing more, I understood the game more, and once you understand how this game is played, it is very enjoyable. The only thing I don't like is that half of the servers require you to download many files in order to play on their server, which can get rather frustrating since some servers have 50 or 60 megabytes of material to download. Now I would give it 18/20, but the fun factor really varies. As a newbie, the game is not very fun, but as someone a little more experienced, it is very enjoyable.

Replay Value- 16/20

There are only 6 or so default maps, but there are many more out there available for download.

Learning Curve- 4/10

As I mentioned in the fun factor section, for someone who is new the game is far too complicated and the learning curve is far too steep.

Overall- 80/100

Overall, Enemy Territory is a good game if you stick with it. At first it will be an overly complicated mess, but it is definitely worth it is you stick with it. Best of all, it is free and legal to download it so there is no risk of paying for a game you do not like.
