Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil

Review by UT_freak

"Why did you make it so short???"

What was it that everybody liked about Doom 3? Was it the pleasure in chainsaw-ing every zombie that came your way. Was it the gripping storyline? Or was it that it was it the fact that you simply couldn't finish it in one evening?

Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil is barely 4 hours of rushed, boring gameplay. You read correctly, less than 4 hours. I don't think I've played a game that's so short since Minesweeper. Maybe I'm not being fair, the game isn't all that bad. The gameplay is similar to that of Doom 3, just cramped into a third of the time.

The two aspects that notably changed in this expansion pack are the weapons and the monsters. On the monster side of things, there are much less of those annoying Trites and Cherubs. The Vulgar has been added to Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil, which is a slightly beefed-up version of an Imp which throws blue electricity balls instead of red fire balls. The other new addition is the Bruiser, which is a experimental mating accident between a Hell Knight and a Mancubus. I won't tell you what it does, you can probably already imagine =)

The new weapons are interesting to say the least. The Grabber, which you obtain early in the game, is probably the best part of this expansion pack. Haven't you always wanted to throw fire balls back at those annoying Imps? Now is your chance to do just that. Pull out The Grabber and throw those babies back and watch them fry. The second weapon addition is the very powerful Double Barreled Shotgun. With the lure of the extreme damage payload but the drawback of an immediate reload I wondered if I would even use this gun. Let's just say I used the DB shotgun and the Grabber more than anything else. The third new 'weapon' is The Artifact. You obtain this right from the get-go. I don't want to ruin its role, but it is quite a handy piece of equipment. I did probably under-use this though as I went past a lot of corpses without stealing their souls. Confused? The Artifact uses human souls as ammunition. On a sad note, Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil does not have a Chainsaw or a Soul Cube.

The bosses through the game were fairly easy but pretty fun as well. The one thing I disliked about Doom 3 (other than the creators obsession with making so many Trites) was the Guardian and the Cyberdemon bosses. I always like a final boss to be a tough duel. If you like this too, then I recommend Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil for that.

If you are looking for an easy, quick blast on the keyboard, then this is the game for you. I found that this game didn't have many challenging fights throughout its course except near the end.

Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil has a poor PDA system compared to Doom 3, serving basically to update security clearance. Only 3, that I got at least, Videos and about 5 message logs through the game. Visually, the same as Doom 3. Replayability...well, there is always room for replayability throughout the Doom series (^^,)

If you loved Doom 3 or just love to shoot things then I would recommend this game for you. Otherwise, I doubt it is worth your time or your money.
