Aliens Versus Predator
Review by NovaStorm
"(Gold Edition Review) Oh man, this game is intense!"
Ok, let me just set the scene for you. You're walking down a corridor thats just got enough light to let you see, you've got your trusty pulse rifle in hand and you think you're ready for anything. Suddenly you hear a high pitched beep. You quickly look at the motion detector you have and a single white spot is heading towards you, you look into the tunnel and see nothing...then an Alien jumps out of seemingly nowhere and your pants become about two pounds hevier. You let off a quick burst of your gun then stop. It's gone, then it leaps from the roof !! You shoot and blow its arm off then finish it of by pumping it full of hot lead.
Sound cool? Trust me, it is. In this game you'll be startled a few times, and others you'll be scared, oh yes, you'll be very tense when you've seen a few Aliens jump at you in this game....
Graphics: Very good, it's smooth and the textures are crisp and sharp, and the polygon models look very good. A great thing is that each species can change their view from normal to another that lets you see in the dark. The Predator excels at this with four different types of vision!! One is normal vision, then the next is thermal, like you see in the movies where you can see the heat signitures, third is Electric, which lets you see Aliens and Androins and gives a red tint to the bacground, and the last is PredTech vision which lets you see other predators and weapons that belong to predators. The lighting effects are also very good, especially when you fire a grenade.
Score: 9/10
Sound: Good, not great. You get another CD for Music but frankly I think they wasted the space. There's only about 2 tunes for each species. Admittedly they're good and give a very tense and scary atmosphere, but it gets annoying after the 5th loop.
Score: 6/10
Lastability: The single player missions are entertaining and will keep you going for a while. The skirmish is crap though, you should be able to customise a game like Q3:Arena where you can have a team of Aliens vs a team of Preds. The multiplayer I can't comment on since I can't play. It seems my ping is too high on my 56k modem..! But I think it would be a very enjoyable experience, imagine 2 predators vs 4 aliens!!
Score: 8/10
Gameplay: This is the best thing about AvP, the atmosphere is brillant. It gets so intense that you don't want to open the next door for you fear what lies behind it, yet you know you have to. It's really cool, skulking through a spaceship then three Aliens jump around a corner you will jump, i'm not ashamed to say I did when I got jumped. You'll especially have fun with the Alien and Predator though because there a stray from the norm. You take the role of the Alien for once instead of destroying them, which is a VERY refreshing change. The Alien can scale walls and go through high air vents which makes it sort of a stealth character. It can run at lightning speed and jump extremely long or high, and can slash at foes with its lightning fast claws and tail. Predator on the other hand is very techno style and has lots of futuristic weapons mixed with tribal and primative weapons such as the spear gun. It has four types of vision, each only good for about one thing, which makes it a very specialized character. It also has a cloaking device which may sound very cool, but I didn't use it very often because it only works on humans and they only have to get within a certain distance to see you. The marine is often overloked, but he is also fun to play because of the powerful, and often over the top weapons he gets. His default weapon has 99 rounds and 4 magazines!! His Minigun can hold 800 rounds and is so powerful it's not funny.
Score: 10/10
Overall: A very fun game and worth a purchase if you like the Alien and Predator films or just tired of playing Humans.
