Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil

Review by Ofisil

"Resurrection of mediocrity"

Doom 3: Resurrection Of Evil is a FPS developed by Id Software and the expansion of Doom 3. This game is pretty much what you would expect from an expansion and nothing more, so read on…

Story: 3/10

2 years after the events of the first game you, another unnamed marine, (why all of Id's heroes are unnamed I wonder?), must return to Mars with your team in order to investigate an area, which seems to emit a strange signal. It turns out that the reason is a strange artifact that was created by the mysterious and ancient alien race of the first game in order to kill three great evils. The moment you touch the object everything falls apart and your teammates are killed and you're once again on your own. From there on your supposed to return back to safety and apart from fighting some new bosses connected to the artifact and confronting Dr. Betruger in his new form the game offers nothing else in its plot.

Graphics: 8.5/10

Pretty much the same graphic quality with all the good and bad points of the original. There are four new monsters that aren't something special in terms of appearance. The areas you'll visit are once again a dig site, the Mars facilities and Hell and believe me once again you'll bored to Hell because all levels look the same. If there is an improvement to the game is the fact that now the dark is less irritating due to more lighting sources… most of the time at least.

Sound: 7/10

Once again, nothing new here. Good sound quality and again no music since the game is relies more in creating a good creeping atmosphere, but unfortunately this time the game isn't so good in that section, (not that the first one was extremely creepy).

Gameplay: 4.5/10
Once again all there is to the game is go from point a to b and kill stuff. There are some parts where a little thinking is required but nothing special or challenging. The new enemies have no originality at all since they are just versions of the older ones. For example we have a new zombie, a new Lost Soul that looks like the one in the first Doom, a new easier version of Mancubus and a new monster that looks like a mix of Alien and the Imp and is basically a new Imp that moves faster and shoots blue energy balls instead of red and finally the AI is still bad even for the new monsters. Along with the new monsters we have 2 new weapons, a double barreled shotgun, (extremely powerful and slow), and the Grabber, (Half Life 2 anyone), which can grab various objects like items, stones, barrels and even fireballs and corpses and then throw them at enemies. Although this weapon is very useful at first, in later levels it isn't the best choice of weapon due to increased number of enemies in very narrow areas. The most interesting addition is the new artifact that can have used to give you three new powers, (you gain one for each boss you kill). At first you gain a bullet time skill, secondly a skill that greatly increases your speed and finally a invulnerability skill. This new artifact is a great item that has to be used cleverly because ammo is scarce, (souls from human corpses). Other than that the game has the same problems, it is very repetitive and as an expansion is veeery short.

Positives:
-2 new good weapons and a great new artifact

Negatives:
-Very short and repetitive
-A forgettable plot
-Less Creepy

Also Play:
F.E.A.R. (PC)
Half Life 2 (PC)
Quake 4 (PC)

Overall: 5.7/10

My opinion is this, the game is an average expansion of a mediocre game and nothing more, unless you're a fan of Doom 3 don't spare a single coin in this game, instead rent it, (in my country and in some others that is possible), complete it and then forget it…
