Planescape: Torment
Review by therater13
"Read a book, less text and frustration."
Planescape torment, this is a mess of a game with a compelling story that makes it semi worth playing. I got this game with soulbringer (which sucks) for around 10$. I was not able to play all the way through planescape but out of what I did play, I realized the story was amazing. I got around half way through the game but I could not take the interface or the crappy combat anymore, but I will get to that in more detail later on. I think this game was a decent buy, just to know the story anyway.
Story: I think the story in this game is just brilliant, in fact its one of the only positives this game has going in its favor. You play as the nameless one, you wake up in a dead room with your only companion as a floating skull, you don't know why you are there but there seems to be a story told in tattoos on your back. Through the game you find out who you really are with small cut scenes and things starting to come clear.
Audio: Meh, the voice acting is fairly well done, I like the guy who did Morte, your floating skull companion. Overall the voice acting is pretty good. The music sets a desolate tone which is also very sad but also creepy at the same time. Everything in this world feel's like its dieing or dead, it's a very immersive atmosphere which might drive you to play through the game even if you have to stomach its god awful game play, but I will get to that later.
Game play: This is where planescape torment really fails, I mean the point of a game is to play it, if you want to see a compelling story, read a book or watch a good movie, this game is pretty much like reading a book anyway which gets a bit tedious after a while. If a game is not fun to play then it is almost always put in my black book's, when I play a game I expect to be able to play it, I don't want to sit there and read endless paragraphs then get shoved into a hard combat situation that requires a number of tries just to do it. The combat in this game is very sluggish and un responsive, it makes the game hard to play. The interface in this game is also very quirky.
If you see this game, if you want a story then by all means buy this game, if you want a fun game, look else where.
