The Beast Within: A Gabriel Knight Mystery

Review by laurabladen

"An incredible follow up to my favourite game"

The brief plotline is this:
A man comes to Gabriel's door asking for assistance and says that a werewolf has killed his friend's daughters. As time goes on,more and more killings are discovered. You must find out what is causing them and stop it.

Also now you get to control Gabriel's researcher,co worker and latest love interest Grace Nakomora(I think that's how you spell it.Even though her voice is annoying her jealous remarks are funny and the best chapter is the sheer detail you get while touring the museums.

I definitly wouldn't give this to anyone at all under 15 although I don't find this as scary as Sins Of The Fathers. Those age certificates are there for a reason.

I would reccomend this most to people who like adventure games and enjoy learning about historical things.I wouldn't reccomend this to anyone who likes action games, although this contains an amount of action is is certainly not a shoot-em-up.

Also it doesn't help that the two main characters are so annyoying. The original cast were much better.Dean Ericson is NOT Gabriel Knight.I am glad Tim Curry is back in III.

Also you have to be fairly believeable to enjoy this game.If you laugh at the very idea of werewolves you won't like this.

I suppose some would consider the game boring.I guess I'm boring. But the other reviews are good.

If you need help on this game I'd go to the review that is the longest.I think it is brilliant and badly want the author to write some descriptive FAQ's for other games.I can really relate to her.

Beautifully,stylishly written.

Graphics:
Most of the game is short movies which you can click to skip. However skipping them causes bugs in the game sometimes and it is tedious to watch e.g Gabriel getting into his car for the millionth time. The other graphics aren't all that great but still good.
Score:8

Sound:
It's all real-life sound so it couldn't get any better.
Score:10

Music:
So addictive.I have remembered the theme tune for 10 years without hearing it!
Score:9

Storyline:
I think the creator is such a good writer.I could never have thought of such a good story.
Score:10

Gameplay/Controls:
Better than Gabriel Knight,as you don't have to choose what to do to an object, you just click and see what happens.
Score:9

Puzzles:
Some are a little too hard, like that cuckoo clock one at the hunting club.It took me seven solid days to work that out.But overall great.
Score:8

Humour:
I wouldn't call it funny, unless you think the supernatural is stupid. But Grace's remarks are mildly funny.
Score:6

Overall:
Still can't beat Gabriel Knight. But worth every penny you spend on it.
Score:9
