Overall: 9/10
PLOT:
You start out by making a decision of what type of class you want to be. You can choose a Fighter, a Magic User, and a Thief. Depending on what you choose, that's how the story will unfold as well as the solutions to puzzles (i.e. to get past army x, a fighter would typically fight his way through, a magic user would cast a sleep spell, a thief would sneak his way around.) Generally, it's a typical save the world kind of plot which ultimately ends up with you being a true hero (which is why you came to the land in the first place, to become a hero. Kind of sounds like Disney's Hercules)
PROS:
The battle system is very excellent. The time element in the game is also a plus. Very good graphics and sounds considering this game was made in the time of the DOS era of games. Mouse control with an icon menu on the top also makes this game easy to get the hang of things. This game far surpasses the old EGA Version.
CONS:
The fact that the game is full of bugs isn't good. Sometimes, the menus will get screwed up and scrambled, but luckily, there is a patch to fix all this on the Internet you can download. Otherwise, tolerate the bugs.
REASONS OF RATINGS:
GRAPHICS:
Good graphics for the time, still good compared to other 2D games. Don't expect the graphics to compare with Final Fantasy 7 or 8 though.
SOUND EFFECTS:
If you can hear them, they're great. If you can't, no big deal. They're good, but they're not necessary to play the game. Again, revolutionary for its time.
MUSIC:
Same as Sound Effects... almost. The music is more pleasing to the ear than the Sound Effects, but again, take them or leave them.
ORIGINALITY:
Considering it's the first game of the series, and one of the first RPGs for the computer, the rating speaks for itself.
CONTROL:
The simplicity of the mouse control makes control perfect... just a little slow on the reactive side for battles for my taste though, but other than that, it's on par.
ENJOYMENT:
The mix of battles and puzzle elements with a twist of RPG elements makes this game enjoyable. Some puzzles get annoying, but building your stats is fun to do if it's your first time playing. Otherwise, it's annoying if you just want to beat the game as fast as you can.
CHALLENGE:
The mix of puzzles and battles make this game a good challenge, but if you've played the other Quest for Glory Games, you will notice it takes you quite a less amount of days to beat the game than the others. Of course, that's when I played it, it could take you less time or more to beat it depending on if you want to max out stats.
ENDING:
All things tie up if you beat it right.
REPLAY:
Since there's two other characters to complete the game with after you beat it once, not to mention you can play the game over with the same character to get things you missed and max out stats, it has good replay value, but then again, your attitude could be where you're glad to get it over with, on to the next game.
OVERALL:
If you're a fan of RPGs, you'll like it. If you're a fan of the King's Quest games, you'll like it. Your tastes might vary if you like adventure and puzzle games though. Overall, you'll find the game along with QFG2, 3, and 4 in a collection pack, making the game approximately $5 since the package costs approximately $20-$25. I'd go as far as to say the game is worth $10 now a days, but it's definitely worth the buy.
TIME TO COMPLETE: 1-5 Hours
