MegaRace 2

Review by Pave

"Just one little step further and it would have been a masterpiece!"

Which are your expectations for the future? Will we have flying cars? Will we use teleportation? No one knows it, but every one is trying to find out the weirdest ideas about it. And Cryo’s game designers are one of them. Would you ever expect a world completely based on Virtual Reality? Would you ever imagine that there would be illegal (but sponsored) racing contests in this parallel universe? Would you ever expect a game like this?

Story: in an unknown future, the world is completely filled up with technology. You will certainly find a lot of cyborgs, robots and many others wandering through the city with human beings. All is so perfect that is kinda boring. The real world is so sad and perfect that people need to escape from it. The world more powerful TV channel, VWBT (Virtual Worldwide Broadcasting Television), owns the better way to escape: Megarace. Here, every kind of people can participate and do whatever he or she wants: as the host says (the annoying and weird guy, Lance Boyle), “It’s not real, it is all virtual!” The VWBT is expecting someone to complete the race grid: will you be man enough to join it? And remember, there’s a good reason to do it: Miss Tanya. 7.5/10

Graphics: who has played the first Megarace, surely remembers the amazing graphic that it offered. This time, things have partially changed. Instead of 2D pre-renderd cars, this time we will have the pleasure to drive (obviously virtually) fully polygonal and beautiful cars. The rest of the graphic is the same: fully 3D rendered and pre-calculated tracks (but this time in their full beauty, thanks to the SVGA), funny and well-done Full Motion Videos and nice screens. As good as its predecessor but much better!!!! 8.5/10

Sound: we have a lot of good sound effects but I’m sure you will get rid of them because of the AMAZING soundtrack. The music, all played by this group named Knockin’ Boots, are the best part of the game!!! 9/10

Gameplay: it plays like every racing game, even though you can shoot missiles (three type of them), mines and oil to your opponents. The game is very playable: after you get confidence with the strange physic and with the controls, you will surely have a lot of fun!!! The game lets you use all the options once you finish the track (so you can save, load, change features etc.), and this means that you have to race on it for three times: the first is with the full grid, the second with one or two less and the third you will have to arrive first against three people and with no weapons. Strange but you will sure enjoy better the amazing tracks! 7/10

Replayability: here we’ve got the faults of all this game. Unfortunately, we have only six tracks (and you can’t choose your favorite one because the contest will let you race on the following one once you finish the first and so on), repeated for three times but always six, the fact that once we will finish the game you must begin a new contest to race on your favorite tracks, the fact that the graphic engine (so pre-calculated tracks) won’t let you change the “action” of the races (even though there will be a lot of junctions)(you should see the map of Bayou, the fifth track to understand!!!), the fact that you can’t play against a human player, the fact that there is just one game mode. Pity because, when it will lose all its appeal, it will be forgotten in your game library. 6.5/10

To buy or to rent it? : Try the demo and you will be surely fascinated. When you will play to the full version, you will be captured. After finishing it for two or three times, you will finish to play it. If you liked the first, you will love this one!!!!
