X-Change

Review by Mike Thomas

"Ever want to check out what dating is like for a girl?"

Overview: Ever wonder how the other half lives? Well, now here's your chance to try. Well... the chance is more forced on you ^_-. You see, you're Takuya, who's a member of the chemistry club at school. One day while cleaning up the lab after classess, an unlabeled jar of chemicals is spilled on you. Luckily nothing happes... The next day, you've changed into a girl! So X-Change begins.

Review: X-Change is a fun little, romantic-comedy game, with a sci-fi twist. Instead of playing as the male-lead (which is very common on these sorts of games), you play as the girl-lead role. It's light hearted style and storytelling give this game a very easy going style.

Although I liked the fact that you got to look at romance, and life as a girl, the overall storyline was a fairly regular romance. It's a good story, don't get me wrong, it's just a standard story. I must say, it is well done how Takuya matures as a man when he realizes that romance is just as hard for a girl. I do like a lot of the humor of the game as well, such as the title X-Change. As in ''exchange'' or ''sex-change''. The game uses a lot of this tounge-in-check humor, as well as scarcasm, slap-stick, and just plain funny situations as it plays.

Fun music aids to the romantic-comedy feel of the game. It's also varied up with a few different soundtracks, so you'll not get bored of the same music repeating itself over and over again. On the downside, no voice acting though.

Graphics are good and airy. They remind me a lot of the style of the designers of Tenchi Muyo, BGC 2040, and Martian Successor Nandesco. They aren't animated, but the character designs do use different poses to help emphasize the current feelings of the characters; from shy and upset, to excited and energetic.

Extras are in the form of a memory room, of the pics you've unlocked, as well as a couple of bonuses on the CD-Rom itself. Peach Princess also offers a couple of game-related paraphanalia on their website.

On the downside, the game is a bit short. With only a couple possible endings, and only a few days to decide if you want to stay a girl or go back to being a man, it isn't the most in-depth game. Other Peach Princess games, like Snow Drop, Water Closet, and Tokimeki Check-in, offer a ton of replay.

Overall, a fun, light-hearted, comedy game that can be picked up and played in an afternoon when you don't want a deep, serious, saddening story. Good art, and a good script make this an enjoyable game. If you want to see what Peach Princess is bringing over, visit their website, and pick this game up. You won't be disappointed.
