Realms of the Haunting
Review by Magnan Imus
"Even after 4 years with outdated graphics, this game is STILL good."
You are Adam Randall, the Shrive Bearer. You have been chosen to wield the sword 'Eternity' and save the world from the apocolypse. But one by one, the seals that hold the balance between good and evil are being broken. Step by step, evil is taking hold. And as time passes, your father, slave to the darkness, is being tormented by the damned. You are the only one who can stop them!
Graphics: 10/10
Even for outdated pixel graphics, they still rock! From a minor distance, the enemies look like PSX computer-graphic cinematic quality. The special effects are rather nice as well.
Sound: 10/10
You hear the sound of ghostly giggling children in the hallways. The crunching of bones comes up behind you. You turn around and see a skeleton! With a ROAR, the skeleton swings at you! You jump back as the sword makes a swoosh through the air. You draw your pistol, and with a few loud bangs, the skeleton is finished. With one more bang, you blast the skeleton's bones to smithereens so he cannot resurrect himself.
That paragraph should have given you an idea of the sounds.
Cinematics: 8/10
They aren't too high quality, but they are still pretty damn good. The great thing is, in some cinematics, you can choose what you want to do! Also, overall, there's like 75 minutes of video within the game. That's why this game is 4 discs big.
Storyline: 9/10
Another save the world storyline. Well, at least it's cool, since you are saving the world from the freakin' apocolypse, and apparently, the game uses many of the legends about the apocolypse. Besides, with all the cinematics....DAMN does that help with the storyline a LOT!
Control: 8/10
Very good control. The character always does what you want him to do. Only two problems...You can't jump that high, and you can't swim. Other than that, it's all good.
To run around, you just use the keypad. To jump, you use spacebar. To select a weapon, you use the numbers at the top of your keyboard, like in Doom/Quake. Finally, to blast something, you simply click on the monster.
Puzzles: 10/10 (Challenge rating)
Many of the puzzles are as hard as hell. But they are rather fun to do, and it helps keep you busy.
Overall: 9/10 (Not an average...I think.)
If you want a good game that'll keep you busy, buy this. Besides...Most computers can run it without difficulty, and it's like...what...10 bucks now? You won't be disappointed.
