Quest For Glory III: Wages of War
Review by Mordecai the Mad
"The third game in a classic series"
Quest for Glory 3 represented the last of the text driven games in the series. It had to happen eventually, and it is not that bad of a thing. I personally enjoyed typing what my character was going to do, but this made the game a lot easier to play.
Story: After the events in Shapeir (Quest for Glory 2) you were declared hero of yet another land and went in pursuit of further good deeds to be done, and wrongs to be righted. So you went to Tarna, an african land, with your Liontaur friend Rakeesh (whom you met in Shapeir). It seems that this land is on the brink of war and Rakeesh suspects foul play. So it's up to you, again, to save the day. What a life. As before, you may choose from Fighter, Magic-User, or Thief. But, if you import your character from a previous game, you may choose to be a paladin as well.He gets several skill which are exclusively his such as Danger Sense and healing spells.
Graphics: The graphics are greatly improved over the previous games. The game is now in full 256 colors. My only problem with the color is that your character is now flesh, as opposed to the cool red color he was before, but I guess it makes more sense this way.
Gameplay: The game is now point and click. You no longer type in commands, you now select them from a command bar. And the battles are a lot different too. You now select your attacks from a command bar, sort of, it's more like a command square. This game is still a puzzle game in most aspects but an adventure game at heart.
Sound: The sound in this game is very well done. The music is no longer limited to the kind of sounds your internal speakers can make. It's all very appropriate for the setting and it all seems to set the mood properly. The sound effects for the creatures are really cool. Giant Ants make weird insect noises and underground worms make loud tunneling sounds.
Difficulty: As with all the previous games, proper preparation will make this game a lot easier. Plus, you can adjust the difficulty of the game if you're feeling a little too challenged. Wuss.
Should I buy this game? As with all the other Quest for Glory games I've reviewed, you can get this as part of the Quest for Glory Collection. And I would highly recommend it.
