King's Quest II: Romancing The Throne

Review by Destructicon

"The best of the series without a doubt."

Overview:
This chapter of King's Quest is a direct sequel to the first one. New King Graham, also star of the first game, is looking to score (not unlike liesure suit larry.) Actually, he's trying to find a queen so he can pass on the royal blood and continue his family's reign over Daventry. He (somehow) hears of a maiden trapped in a tower, and sets out to free her and make her queen.

The game has a lot of variety in it; you will travel through grassy fields, haunted castles, a witch's hut, a shark-infested ocean, and many other locations. The game, though colorful and bright, is almost creepy in its simple, 16-color surreality. High points include a corny yet entertaining plug for another Sierra game (Don't worry, it's not that hard to find if you keep your eyes open.) and an encounter with Count Dracula himself. If you like adventure or puzzle games of any type, this is a must-have.

Gameplay is very similar to the first KQ game; you must wander around a kingdom, looking for any items that can help you. The world has great variety, but once you have played it a couple of times, it seems small and slightly repetetive, and the one colored grass and rooms of trees get redundant. Even so, the game is challenging, but not aggravating, and you will undoubtedly have a great time trying to get a 185/185 score. (psst- don't kill the lion! ;) )

The game's sound is horrible unless you're on a laptop or a really, really old (and quiet) computer. Just put on a CD or some MP3s and turn the sound off from in the program. It uses the PC speaker, so if you deactivate that then you're fine, but if you really want to hear it, just say 'boop boop bip bop boop.' That's all you hear during the game if you keep the sound on.

Graphics... well, I really hate when people judge a game by the graphics, and you should too. If this is what you play games for, get a life or some common sense. If not, you'll freaking love KQ2, and let's just say that 16 colors goes a long way in the right hands. The gameplay is more than enough to offset the pixely-ness of the display, and you can tell what everything is, so that's all that matters. The only thing I can complain about here is that you don't get to see Dracula very much... but I'll let you find that out.

So, let's take a look:
concept & plot 10/10
sound 1/10
graphics 6/10 (but who cares!)
overall *9/10*

Good luck!
