The Secret of Monkey Island
Review by Althor
"So you want to be a Pirate?, well here's your chance..."
The first installment of the series was very original compared to the rest of it's sequel. It has brought out the real pirate adventure that started it all and sequels from this original series are still being made up till today. Lucasfilm Games (now known as LucasArts) never made any other game that looks so funny and entertaining as this, it's the best pirate adventure you will ever find anywhere.
Gameplay:
The game is very funny, hilarious and can be addicting. Walking around in the game isn't much of a problem where you just point and click and the same thing applies when you are talking to someone, you just choose any lines that is already been set by the game to do all the talking for you. But picking up stuff or using an item on something will make you work for it a little, you need to hit the ''use'' button at the bottom of the page then clicking the item you want to use and finally using it on the place you want it to be used. Yes it's a dragging process especially if you want to do the exact same thing more then once, but i still consider this method as user friendly. Which in the earlier version of a Sierra games for example, where you need to type every single command to make something happen. This can be very hard especially if your grammar sucks but it will somehow teach you to use the correct grammar at the correct place and can very much improve on your English.
Story:
Here's the best part of the game... You start off at Melee Island where you wonder around asking people on how to be a pirate. Everyone will ask you to go to the local ''Scumm Bar'', it's where most pirates hangs out and you probably have a better chance to learn more about being a pirate there. After asking around you finally meet up with 3 pirate captains at a private table on the other side of the bar and they actually want you to prove yourself worthy of such title before able to make you one. You accept the challenge and given 3 quest to prove your worthiness. The first quest will ask you to defeat the Sword Master of Melee Island, the second quest will ask you to search one of the lost treasure of Melee Island and the third and final quest will ask you to steal something worthy from the Governor's mansion. How the story unfolds and how you fair in your quest will be up to you, so i'll leave it all here and let you pick up the rest of the story...
Replay Value:
The swords fighting and treasure hunting will get you hooked up more then any other aspect of the game. With a great plot and the given quest i doubt that you will play this game just once. New generation of gamers surely didn't had the chance to try this game and it would be a great idea if they somehow made a remake on this game with new graphics and sounds but keeping all the other elements just the way it is. This can help bring the glory days of pirates games back into the mainframe in new generation of gamers.
Buy or Rent:
Buy it you don't to rent it but lately i heard that this game was abandoned by it's owner/producer making it legal to download it off the net (correct me if i'm wrong here). But I would really recommend it to anyone who ever liked pirates games to give it a try, You'll definitely love it!.
