Neverwinter Nights
Review by Jhedin
"The wait was well worth it! This is the first must-buy PC title of 2002."
I didn't know what to expect when I brought this game home other than a brand new D&D styled game using 3rd edition rules, which I am a fan of. I had no idea what I was getting myself into.
I began by making my usual lead-in character, named - yup, you guessed it - Jhedin. I was looking for more options in the create-your-character, but what they did include was definitely satisfactory. They've made immense improvements in the voice-sets area compared to the games of the past. I was somewhat disappointed to see that the Drow are not a default playable race, however - I guess I'll have to wait for Icewind Dale II for that. I was also hoping for more freedom in stat distribution, but once again I was disappointed there. The outdated point distribution system doesn't allow for any uber characters to be created and only gives you room to make a character that is, at best, exceptional in one single area. A good balance is actually not easily found.
The game handles smoothly. It's point-and-click, of course, as would be expected from this game. Voice acting is great. Dialogue is well-written. The story, as far as I've seen, is engrossing and superb. The graphics are breathtaking, even on the lowest/fastest setting, and far surpassed the expectations I had. The sound is equally wonderful, with vigorous orchestral tracks that really set the mood, even if they get slightly repetitive as you play on.
All in all, this game is quite remarkable. The world builder is a wonderful addition and, unlike the makers of Morrowind, the makers of Neverwinter Nights were wise enough to release a strategy guide that accompanies it. The world builder is a great tool that seems simple but is very complicated as you get further into it. For those of you who understand the C computer programming language, you'll be fine. But for programming dimwits like myself, you might find yourself clamoring for a tutorial or, if you're wise, the strategy you bought with the game.
The game has high appeal for single- and multi-player. You can create your own worlds and campaigns to play alone or with friends and you can also play the official campaign that is Neverwinter Nights alone or with friends.
The game is phenomenal. I cannot fully express how much this game has blown my mind. It shattered all of my expectations and has now set new standards for the next game I buy. The system requirements are far from steep so hopefully lower-end systems won't stop some of you from picking up this title. BUY THIS GAME! I promise, you won't regret it. If you like Baldur's Gate and it's ilk, you will love this game, although if you're not familiar with 3rd edition D&D rules, the transition will take a little effort. Buy this game. It gets Jhedin's (that's me) full seal of approval!
