Planescape: Torment

Review by Mahaloth

"Finally, a descent game about torment."

Screw 'em. Those other guys won't tell you what this game is about but I will. It's about...Torment.

The proper title of this game is simply ''Torment''. Planescape is simply the division of Advanced Dungeons and Dragons that it fall under.

But how can a game be about Torment? How can a game be about agony, pain, regret, suffering?

As you may know already, you play a charachter who can not die. You wake up on a slab in a mortuary and have no memory of who you are. All you have are tattoos on your back that instruct you to find your journal and to find someone named ''Pharod''. Yes. That's all the say. Yep. That's it. :)
You have a guide who is a floating skull, who just happens to appear when you awaken. Not only that, but it seems have some sort of connection with the dead...

Anyway, all this is the basis for the most brilliant storyline ever developed in a videogame. It's not just a search for your identity, but also a search for how and why you became immortal(yes, WHY you became immortal).

Story: 10/10

What is it to truly be alive? Can one's body be alive while they themselves are dead? What is the greatest of all torments? Who are these allies who join you in your quest to discover yourself?

Many questions, many answers.

Glorious. Perfect. Wonderful. Like a wonderful novel that you are involved with. It builds to a climax and rolls out smoothly to an ending, without rushing to finish things. You really cannot predict where this thing is going, so just sit back and be amazed.

Gameplay: 10/10

Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, version 2.0. Straightforward, simple, and perfect. You should have no performance problems. You can choose from Mage/Thief/Fighter when you play the game. Since you are human, you can switch classes at any time. I recommend staying in one class the whole time, since experience earned only goes to the one class.

Graphics: 10/10

They really are phenomenal for 1999. I thought the whole enviroment suited the story so well. I can't imagine anyone complaining, unless they wanted graphics that take full advantage of their 128 mg video card. I hesitate to use the word simple, but the graphics in this game are. They are simple, but wonderful.

I recommend this game if you like to role-play when you play RPG's. Some people have a hard time immersing themselves in a world and this game really requires it. Buy it now. Last I checked, Interplay sold this game(along with crapola ''Soulbringer'') for a total of $10. Great deal.
