King's Quest VI: Heir Today, Gone Tomorrow
Review by oldbill
"A fantastic mystical quest!* Genie not included"
The Kings Quest games are a fine series, each one of them quality adventures. None, however, are quite as good as Kings Quest 6. This has everything a fantasy should have including magic, mythical beasts, and romance. Kings Quest 6 is one of the best adventure games ever made.
Gameplay 9/10
The game is controlled entirely by the mouse, which makes the maneuvering Alexander simple enough for anyone. The right mouse button cycles through the commands: walk, touch, look, and use object. The left button executes the action on the object your cursor is pointed at. It's as easy as it sounds.
The environments are detailed and you can spend hours simply interacting with objects in the Land of the Green Isles. There are also multitudes of puzzles. The majority of them is figuring out how to use an object you picked up to solve a problem. The other kind lies in the Isle of the Sacred Mountain. The puzzles there serve two purposes, to provide a challenge and to prevent piracy. The essential clues to complete these puzzles can only be found in the guidebook to the Land of the Green Isles, which is packaged in with the game.
Story 9/10
After King Graham rescues his family from an evil wizard in Kings Quest 5, the royal family returns to the kingdom of Daventry to continue bringing peace and prosperity to their loyal subjects.
All is not right in the castle, as Prince Alexander can't seem to get a woman named Cassima off his mind. He gazes into his father's magic mirror and to his surprise he sees his love trapped in a tower!
Alexander sets sail with a friendly crew to find his maiden, who is trapped in a tower far away. After a long trip land is sighted and the crew rejoices. However, when the night fell a huge storm blows in, slamming the ship against the rocks. The crew perishes and Alexander is the sole survivor. He finds himself washed up on a beach, where his adventure begins.
Graphics 8/10
These graphics where the finest possible when it was released. The characters look pretty pixilated but it's okay, they aren't too bad looking. The environments aren't animated a lot besides the occasional blowing palm tree and ocean waves.
The game also features short FMV like movies that show the characters in much greater detail. Jerky movements hinder these highly detailed sequences, but the characters in these scenes aren't exactly active as they usually stand still and move their mouths to the speech.
The graphics really shine in the dialogue between Alexander and important characters. When Alexander is speaking his head will appear in a box. His head, along with every other important character, is beautifully animated in these boxes and the mouth moves exactly in synch with the speech. The graphics of Kings Quest 6 aren't exactly awe inspiring but they certainly get the job done.
Sound 8/10
The music of this game isn't really impressive, as they are basically midis. There are some tunes that will have your toes tapping but there's nothing worthy of a soundtrack.
The sound really gets good in the conversations between characters and the narrator's speech. The voice acting in this game is superb, and while there are no movie stars the voices are very fitting for every character.
The narrator really loves his job! He says all his lines with such enthusiasm and feeling it would seem as though he was performing a hit Broadway show instead of lending his voice talents to a video game.
Overall 9/10
With numerous islands to explore and interesting characters to meet you'll find yourself lost in its sheer brilliance as a game. This whimsical tale of love and magic will have you captivated for countless hours. Now go forth explorer, an adventure far beyond your imagination beckons you.
