Grim Fandango

Review by ThePreacher

"One of my all time favourite PC games"

I had to go out and hunt for this, after a damn while I found it and couldn't wait to get home and play it. If you do manage to find a copy of this, buy it without hesitation, you won't be disappointed.

Gameplay:

Excellent. It's great fun as you can interact with many different objects around you in humorous ways. The control is great in this game, however sometimes it is a bit hard to get around, as this engine is very similar to that of Resident Evil. While on that note, what I liked about this game is that you can't die. This not only makes the game less frustrating, but the logic is funny too, you're already dead.

This game is damn hard, let me tell you. If you can get through this first time round without a walkthrough, you should be very impressed with yourself. Although the puzzles do add replay value, sometimes it seems impossible to accomplish them without the aid of a walkthrough. Is this good or bad? Decide for yourself.

Story:

A great story. While to the naive it may seem linear when it all comes together, you have to play this game to see how everything fits together, how every character has that certain depth that makes the story and game that much better. Tim Schafer (the writer) has really done a great job on this game, in terms of writing and directing.

This game can also take many alternate routes, when you approach a character, you don't take part in a pre-decided conversation, you have the ability to choose from a number of options what you want to say or do.

Audio:

The voice acting in this game is great. Not the best I've seen, but very convincing nonetheless. Every line is spoken as it was intentionally written and you'll be laughing a good few times as you play this game. On this aspect of the game, you won't be disappointed.

The sound effects and music are pretty good too, nothing to brag about but you get the idea of what the director and crew were trying to achieve. Although the lip synching isn't spot on (they're skulls, what do you expect?) you'll be impressed at how good everything else plays out, especially considering when this was made.

Graphics:

Not the greatest you'll ever see, even with an updated graphics card. But the good news is, you'll be so into the puzzles and story, you won't really pay attention to the blocky graphics.

They're not all bad though, this is the land of the dead and they are all skulls, so what's to complain about? The pre-rendered backgrounds look great, considerably better than some of the RE games' ones too.

Replayability:

You'll definitely play through this more than once. If not to see all the different options you can take, but just for fun too. This is a great game and you will feel inclined to play through it a second time.

Buy or Rent?

Buy, definitely. It's a great game and I strongly recommend you add it to your PC games collection.
