Battlefield 1942
This is a very good game! Even without multiplayer, you've got campaigns and bots, so you'll always be able to play this game, not depending on Internet connection and friends...
Anyway, the game is set to the pretty common scene World War II, that seems to be a very good thing to base games on, because so many developers use it. ;-)
GRAPHICS: 7 - The graphics are very good! Detailed maps and cool vehicles. One problem, though; when you snipe, you can see players halfway through the ground, not so good...
SOUNDS: 5 - Is it just me, or did I never hear any music throughout the game? But at least the weapon, radio and vehicle sounds are good. ''I need artillery fire!''
CONTROLS: 7 - The controls is nothing special; the usual shooter controls; W, A, S, D to move around and mouse to look and shoot, but they work just fine... It respond good to the mouse and buttons...
DIFFICULTY: X - Well, everything is editable, from AI to amount of tickets... Wait, I didn't explain tickets, did I? This is pretty unusual for this kind of game; instead of trying wiping the whole enemy force out or doing something stupid such as rescuing hostages and defuse bombs. You do something that's more stupid; you take over the enemy outposts! In a map where there's 6 outposts, 3 are the allies and 3 are the axis's. The allies go to attack and capture 2 of the axis outposts, now the allies have 5 and the axis 1, the axis ticket meter is counting down... When it reaches zero, the axis loses! But don't think that you can die every now and then for that, no, cuz when you die, it's -1 ticket for your team...
Oh, and for the difficulty for multiplayer; It all depends on how good your opponents are, if you are up against a gang of masters, it's a 10. If you are up against a newbie... a 1.
LONG-LIVING: 8 - The campaign are short, but you can play it pretty many times before it starts getting boring... And it's even more long-living if you've got friends that play it too, or a fast Internet connection... ;-)
ORIGINALITY: 5 - Well, the scene aren't so very original; World War II. But what's original is the ticket system!! It rocks! It means that you never have to wait for the action again after you have died, you restart at a selected spawn point (often an outpost) almost immediately!
TOTAL: 7 - This is a good game, a very good game. No irritating bugs like other FPS games that are out there (even though the sniping bug could be better). It requires a pretty fast computer to run it (Minimum 500MHz, recommended 800MHz). If you haven't got a fast computer, I think that Counter-Strike is a better choice. But if you've got a fast computer and no friends (or fast Internet connection); this is the game you've been looking for!
''Well, I feel so cool when i drive straight into the enemy HQ and take one of their airplanes, fly over and bomb two of their outposts, then make the plane crash into their third while I parachute to the ground''
- Myself, talking about Battlefield 1942 with my friends
