Lego Racers
Review by IAX
"Why doesn't the car split into the seperate pieces when it hits something?"
Lego Racers is a very, very unique style of racing game. Lego Media publishes this game as it does many of the other Lego games like Lego Rock Raiders, Lego Creator games, and even a sequel for this game. The game as a whole is definitely one of the best games Lego Media has to offer, though that isn’t saying much, seeing as most Lego games bomb entirely, or have a very limited fan base. Overall, everything in the game is really decent, the graphics, the gameplay, the sound. The storyline is the only thing that seems really bad in the game. The sound effects are excellent in making up for that though. In short, the greatest Lego game ever. That still isn’t saying much though.
Story- 3/10- It is a racing game. It does have a story. And it is bad. It goes as that you are a challenger on the Lego Racers circuit. A circuit run by only those Lego Racers who dare challenge the legendary Rocket Racer, who is champion of all who race with Legos. You must work your way to the top in order to reign supreme over all other racers. Give me a damn break, but this game seemingly has a hideous plot that can easily be improved. I give it a 3. Lego Media’s greatest game does not possess the greatest plot.
Graphics- 8/10- Decent, but there are a few flaws that Lego Racers possesses in the graphics category. The plusses shall come first. The racing landscapes in this game are all very nicely designed and presented. For example, the castle raceway has you going through castles, over a drawbridge and through the castle courtyard. The graphics make the racing environments fun, as well. The characters also come presented nicely, and have excellent coloring as well. The cars look like they’re made of real Lego pieces, which is always a plus in these games. Now, here come the minuses which are only minor, but enough to knock it down to an eight. The buildings in the environment look fairly cubed and that kind of has an irregular feel to the eyes, and some of the faces on the drivers look like Bozo the Clown on a good day. They just don’t look right. Some of the characters have different faces than they are supposed to have. Graphically, Lego Racers earns an 8.
Audio- 8.5/10- Sound owns.
Music- 8/10- Give credit where it’s due. The music is good in the game. It is fairly repetitive at times but you know it means well. Each track has its own theme that sets the mood of the racing area perfectly. There are also a few themes that are cool. The Magma Moon Marathon theme is cool. Music was never big with our ancestors, but they’d agree on an 8 here. They’d think it is something awesome.
Sound Effects- 9/10- The music is good, but the sound effects are even better. The sounds of the menu do get annoyingly repetitive and that is what brings it down to a 9. The sounds of building the car appear as being very nice and well presented. The vroom of the motor while cruising down the road feels great. The powerful skids and bumps sound nice, and feel realistic, The sound effects receive the ever great 9 out of 10. Nearly flawless, the sound effects are the best aspect of this game. Enjoy as much as you can.
Gameplay- 6/10- The gameplay, as always, is the meat of the game. The gameplay given by Lego Racers is mediocre but has a lot potential for you to enjoy it. The modes are a bit lacking, but are fairly fun. The game has 3 main modes, single race mode, circuit mode, and car-building mode. Single race mode allows you to run one single race at a single track using some pre-created racer or a racer you have created. The same goes for circuit, except you race four races using a single racer. There are 5 racers you must contend with in the circuits. 4 are guys from the tracks, and the other is a racer who is guy you’re really contending with on the circuit. You go through 6 circuits and then you have 1 final race with Rocket Racer. The final mode allows you to building your own Lego Racer. His car can either be small and maneuverable or big or possess a lot of speed with slow acceleration. You can customize your car as any thing you wish it to look like it to be, as anything in your wildest dreams. The game is ridiculously easy, that can be easy at the beginning but toward the end. You’ll smoke your opponents. The control is difficult to get at first, but as time progresses, you’ll get it. Gameplay deserves a 6. Not bad but not all that good.
Replay Value- 6/10- Replay Value depends on how you enjoyed the game. If you enjoyed it, it’s worth another play and vice versa.
