Ultima VII Part I: The Black Gate

Review by Evil Elephant

"Very Buggy but Fun"

I got Ultima 7 the Complete set. One of the CD-ROM classics. The first thing I noticed with a Pentium 200 and Windows 95 was that the game was a pain in the ass to run. On my 486 it ran but froze often. The one big flaw is that it runs in DOS which rises some very complicated problems. More than once the mouse did not respond since Ultima 7 makes you reboot your computer in DOS mode before being able to run and the mouse did not work in DOS. My brother eventually fixed this but it was extremely jerky. The game's storyline was very good. It's involving and makes you think. The only argument I have with the design is your character is limited to a few responses for a question unless you have gotten that knowledge in the game. I hate the copy-right protection thingy. I lost my book so I had no clue what to do. I eventually got instructions on how to bypass the copy-right protection off the internet. It froze often during gameplay and I don't save often. It was the biggest pain. It had dated graphics and I eventually gave up because it was a hassle to keep rebooting my computer all the time.
