Maniac Mansion: Day of the Tentacle

"Although good, DotT is just slightly below the "Adventure game trio"."

By ''Adventure game trio'', I mean Sam and Max, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, and Full Throttle. These three are true classics, no doubt. Although DotT is a unique game in it's own right, it is not on par with the big three.

Story: 7/10

Heh, this is actually a pretty silly story we have here. Purple Tentacle drinks some sludge from Dr. Fred's Sludge-o-Matic machine, and grows two little stubs for arms. He then decides to take over the world. Sound stupid? Yeah, but it's still good. Bernard (From Maniac Mansion) recieves a letter from Green Tentacle (The hippy-esque good tentacle) that Purple has gone insane, and Dr. Fred is going to kill them both. Thus, Bernard and his two friends, Hoagie and Laverne, set out for the Mansion in hopes of saving the Tentacles. Bernard, being the idiot that he is, forgets that Purple has gone insane and lets both of them free. In order to stop the world from going under Tentacle rule, they now must travel through time to yesterday. Using Fred's time machine, the Chron-o-John, a combination of an outhouse and a time machine, they travel through time. But out of the blue, Fred's imitation diamond. which is essential, breaks and they are all flung into different parts of time. Bernard in the present, Hoagie in the past, and Laverne in the future. Thus, begins their journey to yesterday.

Graphics: 8/10

The graphics here are good, at best. The jagginess of the average 1994-era adventure game is still here, although a bit heavy in this game. The backrounds are well done, with misshapen angles and such. This creates a true comedic feeling, which fits the game's goofy tone.

Sound: 8/10

The music is excellent, goofy, and catchy. Every time era has it's own musical theme. What dropped the score from a 10 to an 8 is the voice acting. It's not exactly memorable, albeit a bit cheesy. Definitely not as good as Sam and Max or Full Throttle.

Challenge: 10/10

Wow, when I first played this game at the wee age of 6, it took me 6 full months to finish the game. Note that this is back when I had a 75 Mhz computer, and AOL 3.1. I had not heard of a walkthrough ever before, and finished the game all by myself. Although Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis took me a good 9 months to finish, this game is as hard as it should be. Not too hard, not too easy, but smack in the middle.

Overall: 8

Although one of the best adventure games, it does not live up to the other LucasArts adventures.
