Battlefield 1942

Review by bcoleicp

"Possibly one of our greatest games?"

Yeah, I know, that's a very bold statement but it's my opinion. After I upgraded my computer with a new PNY GeForce4 Ti 4200 64 MB videocard, I was anxious to try it out with a computer game. My first choice was BF1942. I've been hearing so much about this game and seeing the screens made it even better. Let me tell you this first, I've never had this much fun ever since I started playing videogames. I can promise you that you will be engrossed in this game and before you know it, hours upon hours have passed.

Gameplay:
There is so much to do in this game it's simply amazing. Feel like driving a tank into enemy lines? Maybe you fancy dropping some bombs on a aircraft carrier and sinking it. You can also just march right into your opposition's territory and do the killing by hand. BF1942 also contains an excellent radio system if used wisely. Say you're low on health, all you have to do is call for a medic. If you see a jeep coming towards you then call for a pickup. The list just keeps on going and going. With all the new patches coming out as well, the gameplay just keeps getting better.

Story:
When I first played the Story mode, I thought I would get bored after the first map. However, I just kept wanting to play the next map. The AI Bots are surprisingly pretty smart. Though, they do make some stupid mistakes. I've seen a bot that has just stood there even after I've shot him. Anyways, the Story mode isn't really anything special. It's just like playing an Instant Battle match except this time you must win. Still fun if you're bored or you're internet is down.

Audio/Video:
The graphics in this game are amazing! I can't believe with such a huge FPS how good the graphics can be. I have mine set on Medium at 1024x768 32Bit. The audio is also another amazing aspect of the game. As abovementioned in the Gameplay section, I simply love the radio aspect of the game and the commands my fellow teammates will yell out. I must forewarn though, the singleplayer mode may get a bit choppy for some people on low-end computers. That is the reason I lowered my graphics setting to Medium.

Replayability:
Now this is where the game shines. I honestly believe this game will never get boring! Why do I say that? The multiplayer is nothing but sheer perfection. I say this on the presentation side, though. The reason I say this is because you might unfortunately run into a server where TKers (Team Killers) run amuck. Besides that, I absolutely, positively love playing this game online. I mean, what is better than playing in a server with 63 other humans? Nothing I tell you! Also, one might think that a 64 player server might be laggy. But, it isn't. If you have DSL/Cable, you will most likely experience no lag at all! If I haven't made up your mind yet, GET THIS GAME FOR THE ONLINE PLAY!!!!

To buy or to rent?:
Easiest one to answer, yet. Buy this game! Stop reading this review and go to your local game store and BUY THIS GAME! I can not stress that enough. Once you play the online aspect of this game, I can promise you that you will be hooked. Just give this game a chance and explore it's greatness.
