The Sims: Superstar
Review by brad352
"The most challenging expansion to date"
The Sims Superstar is easily the best expansion so far in terms of new gameplay, and includes the mandatory 150+ new objects that have featured in every pack since Livin' Large was released in 2000. Maxis have finally listened to their consumers and added the ability to follow your Sim to work in the form of new fame-based careers. Like the other expansions, Superstar is seamlessly integrated into the original keeping intact the quirky humour that is typical of the series. Real life celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Avril Lavigne, Christina Aguilera and Andy Warhol also make special appearances, although no interactions are possible except 'Ask for Autograph'.
Gameplay: 9/10
The biggest update the Sims series has recieved, giving the player the ability to steer their Sim along the path to superstardom. The expansion adds a new Studio Town lot which is used to gain the Fame points necessary to become a star. The path to the top is fairly challenging and gives the player something to think about rather than simply moods and relationships. All of the Fame-based objects are mini-games in themselves which require some lateral thinking.
Graphics: 7.5/10
As expected the graphics have become a bit dated in the three years since the original was released, but they are still beautifully animated with plenty of personality. The game has aged better than most others however it does show it's age.
Sound: 8.5/10
Good music and new Simlish ensure that the sound remains a strength of The Sims. You receive the opportunity to hear your Sim singing, which is quite amusing especially a Sim with low skills.
Stability: 5/10
Maxis has lived up to their reputation of rushing out buggy expansion packs. Many users are plagued by load crashes and graphical problems, although admirable support has been provided on the official The Sims forums. Sluggish scrolling and long load times also plague users with slower machines, however players running the game on high end machines should not notice any problems.
Lasting Appeal: 7/10
More challenging and interesting than it's predecessors, Superstar involves the player a great deal more than before. The objects added are a bonus, however after making a few superstar Sims the novelty of having this game will begin to wear off. Still, it's a good diversion while everyone is waiting for The Sims 2 to be released next year.
Final Score: 8/10
Superstar is the most fulfilling expansion released so far, however it only serves to whet fan's appetites for The Sims 2.
