Warcraft: Orcs & Humans
Review by Gruel
"This is the game that debuted the RTS genre!"
The game: Warcraft is a very unique game, it debuts the genre of Real Time Strategy, where you command units to set up a town/camp and seek out to accomplish different goals such as destroying the enemie's town/camp or to rescue some prisoners and bring them back to your base, ect.
Graphics: 6: This game was made in 1994, a year before the 32-bit era, and the graphics look pretty good for its time. All the orcs and humans units look nice and are detailed nicely, but they kinda get mixed up during the heat of battle. The opening Cinema's and the scenes before your campaign missions are nice too, but most of the graphics are pretty bland, and not the greatest, but this flaw was greatly improved in the sequel.
Sound: 8: Sound rocks in this game. You got a great background wartime music which you can also listen to on an audio CD player. Each unit has there own voice. Also if you click on a certain unit over and over, they'll give smart-*** remarks like, ''Why do you keep touching me!'' All those funny remarks makes the game hilarious.
Gameplay: 7: You start off with a peon, or a loborer, or whatever you want to call them, and a town hall. You set the Peon to harvest gold, and then send the next to do as well, then you harvest trees, and build more buildings such as barracks to train soldiers. Then once you build up your defenses, you can work out on exploring the terrain, finding where your enemy is and obliterate there base! Either play as Orcs or Humans, each race has different buildings and units and spells. You can also go through the campaign mode and each mission gets tougher as you go on. My favorite missions are the cave missions, which requires lots of strategy in order to come through.
Replay Value: 6: You can play multiplayer through the use of a modem, but its terribly hard to connect. The game does have lots of maps to play on, and the campaigns are just as fun too.
Overall: 7: A great game that debuted the RTS genre, but the RTS genre didn't get perfected until Warcraft 2 came out. If you don't have this game, and want a piece of gaming history, then go buy this today, you can probably pick it up for a mere $5 or $10.
