Septerra Core: Legacy of the Creator

Review by Zyrxil

"Another crappily done rpg with that had lots of potential"

I saw the only other review of this game on gamefaqs gave it a 10/10, so I just HAD to write a countering review and tell everyone how crappy this game is. Especially considering the frantic remarks about anime the other reviewer made, and lemme tell you this, this game is an insult to anime.

I am an avid rpg player, they are my favorite games, but I can tell you, there is no way in hell you could ever get me to play this game again.

First off, Graphics. The graphics are stuck at a measly 640x480 res. The basic way everything is shown is somewhat like Fallout, except this game could never hope to compare with Fallout. All the character sprites have an ugly black outline. The movement of the sprite's feet aren't corresponding with the distance they actually move, so they look like they're ice skating everywhere. Nothing's that well drawn. And as for anime, the only time anything like that shows up is in a little pic of whoevers talking that pops up when you talk to an npc.

Gameplay: Standard stuff, walk around talk to people, kill monsters, gain levels. The only part I really like about the gameplay was the decision not to use random battles, but rather integrate walking and battles, a la Chrono Trigger. Unfortunately, this is done rather badly, and most of the time, when you encounter a monster, your party and the monster suddenly jump 50 feet back into an open space.
The supposedly unique 3 levels of attack system also fails miserably, as you have to carefully moniter every single bar. It would have been very nice if there was an option for a character to automatically attack when he reached a predesignated attack level.

Music: I don't really care about music.

Other: The flaws in the other parts of the game pale in comparision with the misc flaws. The worst part of the game is definitely, absolutely, the Acting. For the acting, I'd give it a 1/10. The 1 is for the actors speaking all the words clearly and the animated lips on the character models. Unfortunately, the graphics guys sorta forgot about the face the lips are attached to, and the actors weren't backed by good writers or good game designers. The dialogue is absolutely dull, and the movement of the characters in the game absolutely makes no sense. The best example of this is at the end of the first chapter in the game. (SPOILER)

Near the end of the first chapter, you must go to a small canyon, where your kid cousin has apparently been secretly smuggling weapons. ''Of course'', he sets up shop at the highest point and furthest part of the canyon, and none of the ugly mutanted monsters attack him. And ''of course'', when you finally find your cousin, 3 guards from another country suddenly come in from the opposite direction you entered. However, it seems the guards must have used their swords to somehow magically transport them there because the way they came in is from a cliff that goes straight down a few hundred feet. Not to mention the acting is less believable than an elementary school play. Then, killer robots enter from the same cliffs, and after the guards have been turned to ash, they just leave for no good reason, no bothering to kill you too, in the direction of the cliff, while their controller walks Through them and laughs maniacally, etc, etc, and leaves in his giant battle ship. ''Of course'', the robots had to leave because there was no room on the 640x480 screen, and of course, the game had to be left in the crappily done condition its in.

Just DON'T BUY THIS STUPID, CRAPPY ''GAME''.
Same thing goes for Baldur's Gate. Don't even get me started on that.
