Atomic Bomberman

"As good as the others..."

After years of not playing Bomberman for the SNES, I was surprised when I picked this up. When I ran it, I was still in awe... At first, I though this was some multiplayer Bomberman rip-off, but I played it for about three days, and here is what I think of it.

Graphics: 7/10 - Even though it's an old game, the graphics are pretty crisp. They aren't the sharpest, but they will get you along into having fun with the game. Even though the backgrounds/action for the introduction screens aren't overly impressive, they do serve as a decent incentive to play.

Controls: 8/10 - You don't even think about playing it with the controller/keyboard after a while. Like any Bomberman game of this type, if just uses two keys. The rest is basically up to your skill. Any complaints on controls is basically the user's fault. (Or maybe the skates caused you to go too fast =p)

Music/SE: 7/10 - They say stuff after can be quite funny at times. The music is pretty nice as well, as it will get you into the game. Other than hearing explosions, comments, and picking up powerups, you aren't going to hear a lot of other sounds.

Gameplay: 9/10 - This is where it really shines. It's as fun as Bomberman 2 for the SNES. It has the majority of powerups as well. With so many powerups, it rises the production values. Also, you can play online with your friends or others. Every odd thing is there, like springs and conveyor belts to add more variety to the gameplay. Even on the PC, it has no change to the fast and frantic gameplay of multiplayer. My only gripe is that I wish that this could have been a single player game as well, as making this game only multiplayer limits some of the options in this game. As with most Bomberman games, it will take quite a long time before this game gets boring.

In conclusion:

Atomic Bomberman won't win you over with it's outdated graphics, nor will it outshine all the other, newer Bomberman games. If you are a Bomberman fan, or you are new to this genre and don't have an SNES, then try this game out. You will be surprised when you play it. For the others that have been playing these types of games for a while, it will be just as addicting.
