Battlefield 1942

Review by LightScribe

"When I first played this game I almost cried."

When I first bought this game I was expecting a good World War II game. What I got was a great World War II game. I fired the game up and watched the opening sequence. That alone made me emotional to see how good the game was going to be. The main screen opened, and I entered my name. I went straight into a campaign, and loaded up the first level. Then, I almost cried. This game is awesome. The disk sat in my computer for at least 3 months,

Game Play: 10/10 – The Levels In Battlefield 1942 take a long time to load. But, while they are loading, you can read the mission briefing, and look at the map. You are then confronted with a spawn screen. You can either be a scout (sniper), assault (machine gunner), Anti tank (you have a bazooka), Medic (you can heal you team mates) or an engineer (you can repair your teams vehicles). Once you are spawned, you are released into a real battlefield. Sorry a realistic battlefield, I can’t tell the difference. The game is fun to play, especially if you are in a tank. Another fun thing to do is choose a scout in the levels where you have to defend your territory. Find a good spot near an ammunition box and just kill any enemies before they even approach your territory. The game doesn’t have all that many levels, but there are more that you can download on the EA Games web site.

Graphics: 10/10 – The graphics of Battlefield 1942 are very similar to those of the recent Gran Turismo games, or in other words, pretty much real life. . When you zoom in using the sniper rifle, you can see the stubble on the other soldier’s faces. When you have to transport yourself to a beach on a landing boat, the water sprays up realistically, and enemy snipers try to knock you off. Everything looks real, and the worlds are rendered perfectly. The game puts you in the middle of an authentic World War II scenario. In some scenarios, you are looking down at magnificent landscapes and valleys. Sometimes it is fun to blow a bazooka round into a group of enemy soldiers and watch them all die at once. You can also sneak up behind someone when they are in a pillbox, and shoot him in the spine. The game looks so real. There is one downfall. When you point your gun at a soldier, it shows you his name and his team. This is good, but should be able to be turned off. It takes the fun out of hoping for the best. One other glitch is how dead people and destroyed vehicles vanish after a short time. This is stupid, because in World War II, corpses littered the battlefields.

Sound: 10/10 – Everything in this game sounds like the real thing. From the sound of tanks shooting, down to the reloading of your gun. When you use the Browning guns, they sound as if you are standing there. The music is authentic World War II music, and adds suspense to the game. Each type of weapon available in the game has its own unique sounds and this makes the game great. I have played games where reloading an AK-47 sounded like reloading a Shotgun. You even hear your footsteps in a peaceful area, but in a war zone, all you can hear is gunfire, rockets, and air strikes. This game has excellent sound that is true to life.

Game Value: 10/10 – The game is worth double what you pay for it. I wouldn’t recommend you buy this game unless you are running a Pentium 4, and have at least 512mb of RAM. This game is bound to grant you hours and hours of fun, and the good news is that you can choose to go as either the Allies or the Axis. Besides, most people would want to keep playing the missions, trying to pass the game without dying once, and then begin playing online. You may put the game away for a while, but there will be no hesitation at all to whip it out a few months down the track. I seriously feel, that this game will be around for many years to come. This game is yet another breathtaking game released by EA Games.

Conclusion: As you may know, World War II games impress me, especially when you can play from both points of view. This game is the best. Buy this game if you have any interest in war or weaponry. The game puts you in the shoes of a World War II soldier, and the series has only just begun. I would love to give this game 11/10, but 10 is the maximum, and what this game is going to receive.
