Worms 3D
Review by Ben del Raichu
"A Total Evolution"
When I was a kid like you back in 1995, I owned my first Worms game, aptly named ''Worms''. I mastered every weapon one by one, until I was very skilled in the 2-Dimension (2D) game. I was a very keen player of the newer installments in the series.
Now that was the past ...
Now, the same company, turned this wonderful 2D game into 3-Dimension (3D). It became a strategy to First Person Shooting. Everything has changed, except the tradition of Worm shooting Worm. =D
Gameplay, Plot & Controls 3/10
The plot and the missions are still there. The cap of each team is reduced to 6, which makes the multiplayer game fairly easier. The AI has also improved somehow.
However, what turned from an unique yet simple game among all ages became to a game of challenge. It's hard for me to use the long-ranged weapons like Bazooka well. The hotkeys for the weapons have also disappeared. Now you have to use the mouse only to choose weapons. Other than that, you have to rely the keyboard for almost everything, even placing your girders.
What angered me most was once you are partially submerged into the water, you are already considered to be drowned.
Moreover, in 2D, you use 'Enter' to shoot and 'Space' to jump. In 3D, it's clearly the opposite. To backflip, you need to use 'backspace' twice in 2D and 'Enter' twice in 3D. Even the usage of keyboards is confusing !
Thankfully, there is a tutorial to help it out. I recommend all newbies in Worms 3D to try it, even if you are very good in 2D you may flop easily in 3D. But even if there is a tutorial, it wouldn't help much.
Graphics 8/10
Very good ! I'm impressed at the new 3D look. For multiplayer games, you can choose options for the map and let them do the rendering. The worms also moves their mouths as they are speaking. For the victory honour, they clapped instead of jumping. Therefore, I feel that it is getting more realistic.
However, there are few points that I need to point out. The 3D look lets my computer go laggy. There are also 'hidden' pictures. So when I threw the sticky bomb, instead of hitting the enemy, I blew myself up !
Sound 10/10
Added into Worms 3D is the entrance music. The sound themes for the worms have also changed somehow. There is a mix of 2D and 3D tunes, and that's what makes it perfect.
Although my rating is perfect, there is one point I need to tell, the anthems for the victorious teams are gone. But it's okay right ? The anthems of those songs in 2D were incomplete.
Value 6.5/10
For about £18 (US$30 ?). You might say it's a good deal.
Recommendation
For those gamers who still like the old game, stick to 2D. For those who want more, then go 3D !
