Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne

Review by luburulz

"One of my favorite games. Ever."

Oh man, I cannot believe I have not gotten around to writing a Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne review until now. Let me start off by saying, I had never played any Warcraft games until Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos. So yes, I was a a big newbie until I learned how to work everything. And this was also my first Blizzard title, because well, I had never gotten into Diablo (I played a demo but eh..) and I saw no reason to play Diablo II. Then I looked and saw Warcraft III there one day, and I was like, why not? It has so many great reviews it can't suck, right? Right! For once all the reviewers on the sites I checked were right. So for the first few days, I played single player. And it took me a while to get use to everything, but once I did, I tested my skills on BNET. Me and my friend Travis were playing our first game together, and we got clobbered. Hard. The other team used an Archmage to teleport an entire army of steam tanks into our base. So I kept playing Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos until I saw this game, The Frozen Throne, the expansion pack was coming out fairly soon. I had invested hours upon hours into Reign of Chaos, but it was time to move on. So I ordered The Frozen Throne through the mail, and when it got here, I was the first of my friends to have it, so of course, I had to brag a bit about it. Alright, there is a point to all of this pointless rambling. Basically, to sum all this up for those of you who really do not want to read all of that. I was a newbie at Warcraft, and I became super good by the time The Frozen Throne came out. Now let me get onto the review, before I start telling more stories.

Gameplay: 10/10
The gameplay on this game is, well, the best ever in my opinion. Everything is set up for a newbie to learn it, and for hard nosed battle hungry warlords (or just guys who are super good) to pick it up and to play. The one thing you really need to learn though, is definitely the quickeys. If you are just using your mouse all the time, and do not use any quickeys, and you are facing a person who uses them, chances are you will not last. Now do not get me wrong here, you may last and you may be able to fight it out, but usually, the quickey user always beats the mouse only user. And that is a simple fact.

Graphics: 10/10
This game is so freakin' beautiful. If you have not seen the graphics in any screen shots, then well, look at some. Now. Even though most things do not look very realistic, it sure seems like it. And the CGIs, are well, the best I have ever seen. The only CGI that annoyed me a bit, was not really a CGI. And this a spoiler coming up, so if you do not want to know what happens, skip this part. See, the fight between Illidan and Arthas. I do not know what in the world Blizzard was thinking here. From this CGI alone, you can see that The Frozen Throne was probably a bit rushed, which is understandable. Because Blizzard really wanted to get the expansion out quickly so that they could cash in, because it was the summer, and they easily had the best computer game out.

BNET:
This is a section devoted entirely to the BNET experience. For those of you who have never been on BNET in any game, basically, it is the internet version of Warcraft. You can go into rooms and chat, or join a game. You can play either a random team game, where the almighty BNET team picker thingy (sarcastic here folks) picks you teammates. And unless you play solo, you will always have that chance of having a back stabber (one who attacks their own teammates) or a newbie on your team. And most of the people on BNET are jerks. And that is just the truth. There are the great trash talkers (who really are fun to beat, seeing and they usually cry and leave when they die, or continue to say you suck, even if you destroyed them horribly). And the really high ranked veterans, who only care about their record, and nothing more. I play for the fun of the game, and that is how I feel most should approach it. It is a game people, no need to go psycho if you lose.

Rent or Buy:
This section will be brief. I can sum it in one sentence. Here it is: You cannot rent PC games, and so you are left with a buy or keep walking, buy it. There that was easy, eh?

My Final Word:
Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne adds a new spice to Reign of Chaos. You have a lot more heroes, and stuff. And since I did not mention it earlier. Basically there are four main races in Warcraft III, human, orcs, undead, and night elves. All four have their own unique heroes, buildings, and defensive moves (an example would be humans ability to have their peons to quit working and become militia long enough to defend a base). And that is about it here on Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. It is a great expansion to one of the greatest games, ever. But remember, you need Reign of Chaos to have The Frozen Throne. So if you plan on playing only The Frozen Throne, you got to pick up Reign of Chaos as well.
