King's Quest VI: Heir Today, Gone Tomorrow

Review by Braben

"The very zenith of the series."

King Quest V was great, and this sixth part is not only better, it is a million times better, it was probably the best graphic adventure the time it was released, an amazingly imaginative fairy tale no to be missed by any fan of the classic and now vanished genre.

The game starts when king’s Graham son, Alexander decides to go to see princess Cassima in The Land of The Green Isles because he fell in love with her. A storm suddenly destroys his ship, but fortunately he’ll end on one of the main Green Islands.
The story I mix between Alice in Wonderland and all of that mythological Greek tales, there is a lot of amusing and weird characters and things too see, variety and originality of situations is probably the game’s biggest achievement.

The gameplay is like an enhanced version of KQ V, the commands are basically the same, and the game goes on in the same way, solving really difficult puzzles.

The graphics were probably the best that five or six of those four megabytes disks were able to hold (I can’t remember exactly how many discs were). The level of detail in all the scenarios is fantastic, and the animation and cut scenes are splendid.

The only little problem we will find here is the same from KQ V, this game is nearly impossible without a faq, there are labyrinths, dialogues where you have to give the exact answer and things like that, then the fact that you can die add even more difficulty.

I still have the original box and all the manuals, their quality is top notch, the game comes with a small book in which the you can read together with drawings the story of the six island you’ll have to visit during your adventure, as well as some secret codes needed to advance in some of the game’s areas. This shows how much effort (and money) Sierra probably spent big buck in the production of this game.

Roberta Williams (the creator of the series) went too far with this sixth instalment, KQ VI is much more than a classic, it was the only game that was a match to Monkey Island. Saga. As I said before, not only is a million times better than the fifth par, King Quest VI is unbelievable.
