"Great graphics but obviously hard!"
Lode Runner 2 has certainly changed from its previous version. This game has a different feeling, with their brand new game! But, several conditions make this game poor.
Graphics – 9
The first thing I noticed about this game is the awesome graphics! Since they are in 3D, it’s absolutely cool to see the rendered, detailed and colourful graphics. Visually, you’ll notice lots of changes gone through here including the backgrounds and animations.
Music – 8
The background music are even fun though some are just ‘normal’. Nothing special so no comment though sound effects are just fine.
Gameplay – 7
I know this game is cool, what with the graphics and music. Unfortunately, it’s not perfect 3D where you can roam about anywhere which means this game is just half-3D. Even the levels are increasingly difficult because of this kind of 3D environment. Sierra obviously spends too much time on the graphics and concentrates less on the controls and gameplay itself.
This game takes over the previous game, simply shooting holes at floors to make traps for your enemies to fall down. There are more items here than before like ladders, traps and many others so you’ve got to be seriously prepared. Don’t be fooled by the looks of the enemies, they may look easy but could be tough. Try and have a strategy, that could get you out from the lot.
Controls – 5
Worst I’ve ever seen and I think I seen enough. There are quite a number of keys to take care of, pressing every single of them and it will take even a genius for a while. Wonder what’s so important with shooting diagonal? I still prefer the original version, simple, easy, neat and most importantly, fun.
Replayability – 7
This game has a build-in, beta level editor that allows you to create your own levels! It’s a cool program to be sure! Since this program is in beta (and under-construction), it doesn’t have technical support for it. Don’t call Sierra if has burn out your hard disk. What about the game? Okay, there are simply lots of levels and as I say, they will be tremendously hard unless you’re a real expert. So it will take you a time to complete all them, let alone replaying the levels.
Overall – 7
For me, it’s recommended for intermediate and of course, advanced players. If you’re not, you are likely to have trouble with this game. Nevertheless, this game is worth the buy if you like action-strategy games. If you’re just a beginner or a 2D-games addict, forget about this game.
