Review by Braben

"Better than Doom, but don’t ask me why."

Quake, like his little brother Doom, it monotonous and repetitive, all the scenarios have the same designs, the same textures, and the same everything, then the weapons suck, the game is hard as hell, and, once you figure out how to kill that S·”$!%&· final boss, Id Software will reward you, like they did in Doom, with a memorable ending, and no, it is not a secret picture collection of Carmen Electra, it’s something much, much better, nothing more and nothing less than an amazing text that says something like this: Thank you for beating the boss and playing the game. Now that is what I call a gratifying ending, it makes you want to play again, really.

As I said before, the only usable weapons are the grenade launcher, the missiles launcher, and the shotgun, and the gun you start with is useful sometimes too, but the rest of them are there just to make you think there are more than three weapons, the nail gun runs out of bullets too quickly, that weird weapon that throws energy waves or whatever they are also runs out of energy in no time, of course we have that super mega weapon that can only be shot one or two times because it is slower than president Bush trying to spell his own surname, and some more that are there for no reason.

Something that I hate about some first person shooters is that every time you manage to kill to something, the next immediate step is try to save as soon as possible no matter what because within the next two second you’ll be probably dead. That is what I hated the most about Doom and what I hate the most about this Quake and all the shooter that has the same problem, and this is one of the main reasons (only one because there a re tons of them) Golden Eye is and it is always going to be the absolute king of the first person shooters, because, even if it was hard as hell in the highest difficulty, the enemies are rather easy to kill and you wasn’t able to save until the scenario is finished.

The graphics are fully in 3D, and they are good, specially the enemies, they are very well done, some of them are disgustingly cool. The music is made by grunts, howl, cries and all of that that type of guttural sounds, or at least that is what I assume because I haven’t heard anything aside from that. Also, it is said to be a plot around somewhere, but I am still trying to figure out where.

The multiplayer option is very fun yeah, but these games are always fun with a fried, even Doom was fun with a friend.

With all, I am still trying to figure out why did I liked this game because it has every single flaw Doom had. Anyway, unlike Doom, I have even finished it, from the beginning to the end (and without cheating eh!), so that is why I think it’s better, maybe. In any case Quake is another overrated mediocre game.

”My lack of vocabulary and grammatical errors (if there’s any) are because I’m not from an English speaking country, sorry about that.”
