Day of Defeat

Review by DarkSoulNoHope

"If you are looking for teamwork or a good class based game, don't look here"

What has ever happened to trying to create a team game that requires teams? Or a World War Two based class system that has teammates fulfilling their roles? If you are looking for either, don't think about this game.

Graphics 6/10

The graphics in this game are based upon the aging Half Life engine so I will go a little easy on it. Graphics are grainy on the world textures unless you have a high end graphics card (with AA and AS turned all the way up) and also the particle effects from the grenades isn't too impressive.

Interface 3/10

Steam is just one problem after another. From problems connecting to server to fears that the next auto-update will put in new problems instead of taking out bugs from the game. (as proven with 1.1 Avalanche before fix) Valve should either give up on Steam and go back to WON or fix all of the problems in Steam at once (after extensive testing) and then send the final product to us.

Gameplay 3/10

Not friendly to newbies or veterans, especially since we can find many people who pitch a tent in an almost certainly unkillable spot and call that ''defending''. Yes, campers rule the day on this game especially since you can't go far without finding some corner you forgot to look around or a slit that you can't see them in but they can certainly see you.

Most maps do seem Axis oriented too, most maps for Axis have nice dark holes or windows for them to fire out of while on Allied you have bright, visible, and easily targeted sniper areas. (avalanche map easily shows this, second place is caen) Good luck being an Ally on this game.

For weapons many of them are one hit kills. For Axis the K98, K43, and K98 Scoped and allied the Garand (if you have the luck or if they are standing still long enough for you to get a headshot!) or the Springfield. And due to these weapons, if in real life the riflemen would hold back and shoot the enemy from afar while the sub-mgers would go in to assault the enemy. Well that's not how it happens here, rifleman run around the map assualting and the sub-mgers fall back because they are well outclassed by these one hit kill weapons and the fact that you can somehow you can ''realistically'' (as this game is supposed to be) run back and forth, side to side dodging bullets and shooting rifle shots into each person. The only good thing is, they took out shooting while jumping so no complaints about being taken out by the person while DoD makers claim they ''lowered the accuracy while jumping''.

Teamwork is what is worst about this, because of the high power of the weapons most people just run out and start killing people immediately, not caring that to win the game you must capture all the flags. Good luck trying to find a teammate who will back you up while you are being shot at, most likely they will hold back until you are dead and then come rushing in at the weakened enemy.

Conclusion 4/10

Slightly above average graphics for a Half Life mod but falls down after that with problems even connecting to a server. Then when you finally get to play either trying to guess while running a 1:1 ratio if the guy with 30 kills and 3 deaths is either really good (doubtful but possible), really lucky (probably didn't get hit by camp killers), cheating (with Half Life engine is still problematic with cheaters no matter what Valve is doing), or just camping him/herself. Only good thing is there is never a time I hadn't found a time with no people playing the game, so enjoy it while you can until the campers come at you again.
