"An entertaining and challenging game..."
Think Halo, except with modern vehicles and modern weapons instead of the future. That describes Mobile Forces, the first person shooter from Rage and Majesco. Although the game doesn't feature anything that makes it even a bit original, for what it's worth MF is a pretty good game.
Gameplay - 8/10 - Mobile Forces allows you to use many vehicles, ranging from Hummers to small tanks. Riding around them is much fun, as many bumps and twists around the levels cause you to go airborne. The game uses the Unreal engine and unfolds kind of like Unreal Tournament, with many modes including the classic Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag and some new modes made for vehicles such as Trailer, in which teams try to bring an explosive truck to their enemies base. The bots are much smarter here than many other games, despite that it was released back in 2002. Besides the single player campaign, the game features a Skirmish mode, where you can fight with any map in any arena just for fun. When you play with up to 16 players in this mode, I have to admit, the game does become a bit laggy, which lowers the gameplay score. The game features awful weapons models, particularly the assault rifle. It feels like your fighting with toys so it gets disappointing. Eventually though, you get over it.
Sound - 9/10 - The sound isn't half bad in Mobile Forces. The voice acting isn't flawless but well above average. Several remarks and insults do sound a bit like some from UT's but its not a major problem. There aren't any sound lags and usually it flows smoothly.
Graphics - 7/10 - MF doesn't feature excellent graphics, considering it's release in '02. But they are still pretty good and some elements stand out.
Story - 0/10 - Mobile Forces does not feature any story at all but it is not requested at all. When purchasing a first person shooter you buy it for the action not for the story. Who cares about the story in an action game? Don't let this one bring you down, MF is still a great game.
Play Time/Replayability - 10/10 - This is where MF really stands out. If I counted correctly, MF has 11 maps and 8 modes to play each on. THAT'S 88 MATCHES! This means lots and lots of fun time and a pretty long and difficult game. The original modes in the game are also creative and are a good entry in fps action. MF has at least 20 hours of difficulty into it! This game also delivers where gamers like it the most: having the levels slowly and gradually rise with difficulty instead of each one being too easy or too hard. The first few maps are a breeze but soon they grow more difficult, as more and more bots join the game.
All in all, MF is a great game worthy of your money. I managed to pick it up for 2 bucks so its likely you can find it for the same. But trust me, it is worth a lot more than that and is a superior game compared to all the useless and easy shooters being released today. MF is a beautiful game, not flawless but with more good stuff than bad in it. If you happen to save up some extra cash, get MF.
