Battlefield 1942
Review by JihadJoe
"You must get this game now!"
Gameplay wise, this game is awsome. Wonder what it feels like to be coming ashore during D-Day, or in Iwo Jima? Well now you can experience that in the comfort of your own chair.( Hope Im not sounding like a TV commercial )This game was meant to be online, so single player is lacking. It lacks missions, you just play multiplayer maps with bots and the bots are stupid. AI is bad, but again this was meant to be online. Online, you can play with up to 64 players, and you can do pretty much whatever you want, be it drive a tank, a submarine, battleship, bomber, fighter, dive bomber, and yes even an aircraft carrier. The coolest thing is, one player can be driving a Aircraft carrier, while several other players man the Anti-aircraft, or flak guns, not to mention others taking off on the planes in the carrier. If you choose to be a foot soldier, you'll have the option of several classes, like scout(sniper), Assault, Anti-Tank, Medic and Engineer, each class has their own weapons, Like ARs, SMGs and Bazookas, not to mention bolt action rifles that kill with one shot if aimed right. You basically have 6 countries, US, Great Britain, Russia, Japan, Germany and Canada, the latter was added in the 1.6 patch in only one map, but nice to have nonetheless. You play in somewhat historical battles, like Omaha Beach, Iwo Jima, Midway, El Alamein, Tobruk, and many others. You fight these battles with your buddies in tanks, jeeps aricraft and everything else from world war 2.
The graphics are really good, though you may need a fairly powerful computer. This game can support 64 players at the same time over the internet; and one may think, ''the graphics can't be that good'', think again, the graphics are in pair with anyhting else out there. You can see the bullet holes in the walls, and even on armored vehicles, like for example a tank when you shoot it. This game kind of takes a ''comic book'' approach to WW2, so you won't see any blood, and the graphics aren't as reallistic as possible, but you wouldn't expect it to be, given it's an online game. The rag doll physics also add to the fun factor. EA included different graphics settings, so that those with less powerful systems can run it, yet get the expirience they were intended to experience.
The sound in this game is good, not the best but it's high quality. The weapon sounds are not realistic, and sound like they were made up, not recorded from real weapons. In other words, the sound of the weapons in the game does not resemble that of their real-life counter parts. The music is average at best. Unless you're a sound junkie, you will find the sound to be really good. As with the graphics, you can choose the audio quality you want, but again, without sacrificing the ''experience''
Replayability, are you kidding me? If you're like the rest of battlefield players, once you start playing, your mom's going to have to drag you away from the computer to eat dinner, not that that happens to me :) . Trust me on this one, you won't get tired of mowing down the allies at Omaha beach, or shooting down RAF pilots in the Battle of Britain. There are plenty of maps that provide for different play styles, like air battles, tank battles, infantry battles, naval battles, and combinations of those. With this, you can't get bored, at least not for 3 years. Let's just assume for a second that you DO get bored, there are plenty of mods and full conversions to keep you entertained, for example, they have Desert Combat, which is set during the Gulf War, Eve of Destruction(Vietnam), Pirates( this explains it all, it's about pirates ), and many other mods. There are as many, if not more mods for this game than there is for Half- Life.
The biggest question of all is, ''Should I buy this game?''
Well, the answer is a resounding yes. This game makes all your WW2 fantasies come true. Combining great graphics, sound and gameplay with online play, this game is defenitely worth the money. You're probably thinking, ''Hmmm I'm not sure if I want to spend 40 bucks on this game'' well stop thinking soldier, you ain't here to think, you're here to follow orders, and I'm ordering you to go get this game right now, then when you buy it, drop and gimme 50! That's right, the standard 20, plus 10 for not buying this when it came out, 10 for doubting it's worth the money and 10 because I'm just an old drill instructor. No really, GO GET THIS RIGHT NOW! You're missing out on a great action game, and vehicle sim.
