The Curse of Monkey Island
Review by Skye7707
"The only pirate adventure that asks the question: What's Sharper, your sword or your wit?"
~ Introduction ~
This game is THE BEST game in its genre, it just owns broken sword and those other games that are trying to beat this game. I enjoyed playing this game and beating it 17 times! One of the best story lines ever, a lot humor and other things make this just the perfect game of LucasArts.
~ Game Play ~ 10/10
It's a point and click game, if you read my other review about Runaway and said why are you giving this a bad score well, read this review and you'll understand me. Play with Guybrush Treepwood. Move our mighty pirate with the mouse along several places going from rollercoasters from Le Chuck to a little harbor, beach, swamp, mountains and other cool places, see? the controls are just easy, you can hold your left mouse button to choose to talk, examine or use, you can always use E, U, T if you want to use the keyboard.
You can pick up things like a hammer, scissors, balloons, cans, pots, and more useful tools and combine them, in the first area you need to make a stick with a hook that you got from Wally by giving him a guilty feeling when you talked to him. This game is great in this thing, you'll need to talk to people to get things, combine them with new things to get to areas where you never could go before. There are also some mini games like the "Pirate Insulting" game, where you need to enter a ship by first shooting it with your cannons, if you win the swordfight with your insults you can get their treasures and buy new cannons. There's also a cool pirate song when you're in hat part of the game.
~ Story ~ 10/10
You're Guybrush Treepwood, the mighty pirate wannabe. You're in a bumper car, that you've used to escape from monkey island in "Monkey Island 2 LeChucks Revenge". When you writing in your diary that you're hungry and want some bananas or grog you'll see the grog and bananas float by but Guybrush didn't see them, it's just hilarious when you see the cutscenes but I'll come back at this in the graphics review part. Now in your bumper car you float in a harbor where LeChucks pirates are attacking a fort, they noticed you and captured you. You're in the ship now and you'll find your frind Wally.
You also find a huge diamond ring that mr treepwood wants to give to his one true love .... Elaine. But ...... there is one little thing, the ring is cursed when the pirate wannabee gives the ring to Elaine and ask her to marry him she turns into stone. Guybrush leaves her at the beach and asks for help, when he's back Elaine is gone, here's where you start, find a way to get a ship and save Elaine, get some stuff to get the ring off her finger and uncurse her. When you beat the game you'll see a romantic cutscene where Elaine and Guybrush get married. The story continues in "The Escape From Monkey Island".
~ Graphics ~ 10/10
The graphics are cool and very detailed for a game from a couple of year old, yes that's right, I bought this game in the summer of 2003 (got the demo before that) you see some cool face expressions like when Treepwood is scared or happy. He'll even will get turned into a chicken! There are a lot locations and most of them have several things to examine. You won't beat the game in one day (like me) if you want to examine all things. I didn't because I beat it over 10 times now.
~ Music / Speech / SFX ~ 10/10
The music is cool, the intro music is cool, I got it as an mp3 along with the pirate song. Speaking of the pirate song, you must hear it when you play the game. You'll say something and your crew will ryme on it. The song ends when you say something with an organge, hehe, dorgange nope, the end ^^.
The whole game is full of speech, that's the main reason why the game is 2 cds long. I don't think there is anyone that doesn't have a voice. And there are only a few voice actors, they are surely pro's at this!
~ Play Time / Replay Value ~ 10/10
I think if you play this game for the first time on the normal mode you'll be busy for about a week if you have experience with this kind of games. I once beat it in a couple of hours ^^. Mega Monkey is something else, it's a harder version of the game, there are more puzzles to be solved but once you know them it's pretty easy when you replay it. Yup, you can beat the game for 10 times and it doesn't get boring, beat it 20 times and maybe you'll won't be amused as you were when you played it for the 5th time but that's with all the games. Why do you think they made a Monkey Island 4 and are busy with the fifth version?
~ Overall ~ 10/10
One that every gamer MUST have in their game collection.
I bought this game from UK (I live in Belgium) just because it wasn't for sale in my country! I didn't care about the taxes and stuff I wanted the game so badly!
Rent or Buy? If you don't have this game you're collection just can't be complete!
