Battlefield 1942
Introduction
Battlefield 1942 takes place during WWII and involves the major fronts. You can play as several different classes of soldiers to fight against the opposing team. During the game you can command a number of water, air and ground vehicles to help speed up the process. I don't own a copy of Battlefield 1942, but I played for, what now seems like, forever. Battlefield nailed massive on-line person V.S. person gaming, and for a good reason. It is very addicting because the absolutely unimaginable size of the environments. This game deserves excellent recognition when it comes to setting the bar for massive on-line games.
Gameplay 9/10
The gameplay in battlefield is rich in diversity. The focus here is on multiplayer. While there is s single player, it doesn't have a smart AI and barely holds a candle to the on-line experience. There are plenty of things to do. You can go on a air raid and drop bombs onto an enemy's base. You can go out as a covert sniper and set yourself up for a shot. No matter what kind of combat you prefer, this game will have it. Adding to this diversity is the size of a map and the amount of maps. You're given a target, and that's all. You can pick your vehicle, your direction, and your soldier class (marksman, scout). You can put together a squad and land on the beach. The best part is it's easy to learn. Once you pick the class, that's it; there are no confusing special moves or abilities (except of obvious ones) that come with each class. This makes the game easy to pick up and learn. The game is very smooth, and you will not have trouble with it freezing up on you.
Graphics/Sounds 8/10
Graphics are comparable to other games but Battlefield won't win reward for the best graphics. The graphics won't the way of the gameplay, so you won't have to worry about them being downright ugly. They are better than some games on the market. The glitches are few, and very rare. When you consider the size of the maps, it defiantly out-weighs improved graphics. The sounds aren't the best, but they are immense, and can easily be compared to the best on the market. The tank engine sounds mixed in with raging gunfire, swooping planes and exploding bombs create a rich mix in the sounds department. Each gun has its specific sound of firing and reloading.
Controls 9/10
The controls are probably the as easy as you can get. The foot soldier controls and ground/water vehicles are very easy to use. However, when you start to fly, it is very hard. You can't just jump into the front of the plane and expect to be an ace combat fighter. It may take days or weeks for you to fly decently and perform dog-fight moves (you might have to switch to single player to have more time), but when you can, the pay off will be huge. The controls are simple, effective, and difficult when they should be.
Replayability 10/10
The replayability in Battlefield 1942 is huge. While single player offers a good ten hours of practice, you will soon want to switch to multiplayer, as the game is much better. Since the game is very popular, you don't have to worry about people not playing. One thing that really increases the replayability is a downloaded mod (modification). You can change the game from a World War II setting to Modern-day Desert combat and then even change it to a Star Wars mod. This will magnify how you play this game, because depending on the mood your in, you can play a different mod.
Story 8/10
The story mode pretty much follows a campaign. As I said about other things in this review, it doesn't have the best story. But does give you plenty of visuals on where the war was fought.
Value 10/10
This game as plenty of value that comes with it. It offers so much to be done and so much to do. You can buy the original Battlefield 1942 together with the two expansion packs for only $40! That is a good deal considering other games that cost $50 dollars and don't last as long. If you don't have an Internet connection, I don't recommend you buy this game. Even though it has s decent single player, it will leave you starving for multi-player.
Rent or Buy? Recommended?
If you have an Internet connection, get this game. It is very cheap, and provides plenty of playing hours, as long as you can handle, because the fighting never stops. I recommend this game over any kind in the genre. Fans of any kind of genre will have fun with this game.
Strong Points:
- Lots and lots of playing time.
- Good Value.
- Massive Environments.
Weak Points:
- Single Player is pretty bad and only useful for practice.
- Needs A.I. Improvement.
Final Words: BUY IT!!!
Overall 9/10< /b>
