Urban Assault

Review by kirbyroks

"*drools* The Evilfurz tank will be mine! Brilliant game!"

This game may be older, but it has OK graphics and EXCELLENT gameplay. And as we all know, game-play is what it's all about. One of PC gaming's finest hours is Urban Assault; That dreadfully underrated and unheard of masterpiece given to us by Microsoft.

Game-play: 10/10
The gameplay in this is awesome. Ever played a Real Time Strategy game and anted to enter the units and show the CPU who was Boss? Well this game combines elements from Real Time Strategy Games and First Person Shooter, with Driving to make a heck of a game. You play the role of SDU7, a cyberneticly enhanced human being who was grafted into a massive host station and entrusted with the task of saving the world from the invasions of multiple alien and radical humanoid factions. Just when you think you have one faction whipped, another faction comes on strong and you have two factions on your hands. When you overcome then, an alien faction comes in and gives the others recover time, and so on till the final battle. During the course of the game you will acquire new technology, weapon and armor upgrades, as well as more energy and the ability to create buildings. You conquer more territory and power stations and use that power to create more units and more powerful units.

Story: 7/10
The story here is pretty good actually. Aliens and radical Humanoid factions have targeted Earth after it is discovered to be a prime source of energy. War ravages the planet rendering it uninhabitable save in special shield domes. Eventually the Mykonians build a parasite machine that sucks the energy strait out of the earth's core and feeds it to them. This machine is causing the planets magnetic biosphere to collapse. You have to stop this or humanity is doomed. It is kind of cliche, but defiantly engaging enough.

Graphics: 8/10
While the graphics may not be incredible now, they were for the time and are still decent. At least your eyes don't try to suicide when you play the game. If you have all the effects turned up to max, and 3D on it looks decent and you don't need a very powerful PC to do it. It has some neat effects such as a host station dying, but nothing much else.

Sound: 5/10
The sound in this is nothing special. Mainly lots of sound effects that are all average, and the music, while appropriate, is not very impressive. The music however is very good at making you so tense during a hard battle that your girlfriend comes up behind you and gives you a kiss on the cheek and you flip out and accidentally nuke your host station. Then of course like any game you get used to the music and don't even notice it.

Replay value: 9/10
The replay value here is awesome. I have played through the game many times and it is indeed one of the better games. The only shortcoming is that the very fun multiplayer is only free-for-all. No teams. Overall it is a very fun and replayable game, and even more so with the modifications that can be done to it.

Summary: 9/10
Buy the game, it will cost you $5 on E-bay and is one of the better games you can buy, be it to play, to mutilate and mod, or to just brag to your friends about having. I have enjoyed it and it will bring much enjoyment to you.
