Starcraft: Brood War
Review by DeckardCain
"Starcraft... The best strategy game with loads of action!"
Starcraft is a game involving the knowledge of strategy. Blizzard, the creators of Starcraft, has done a fine job in the making of the game itself, as well as the expansion addition. This game is quite entertaining, yet it requires great tactics to win the war.
There are three races to choose from to reign over in battle. The races that can choose from are the all mighty army of the Terrans, the strong and all knowing Protoss, or the fierce and cunning Zerg. All races are equal, with unique powers and plans to reign supreme out of the three.
There is several gameplay you can discover while you begin your game. Some gameplay is of course, one-player mode. If you play one-player mode, you can either choose Missions to play, which is kind of like story mode, which is very interesting. Or you can choose to play a quick game with a set amount of players and a map to plan on. You may play up to seven computers, select different types of gameplay (1 vs. 1, teams, Scenario type games, etc.), and choose from several maps to play on.
You can also play online with Battle.net's free online gaming server. It is extreme fun when you team up with another player to beat up on the other players or computers. Multi-player is the best part of gameplay you can get from any game. It is never boring, and can keep you entertained all 24/7. @_@
Another great feature is the Campaign Map Editor included in the game. You are able to create your own maps, with many triggers, unit / hero editing, etc. that you are able to mess with. It is very popular on Battle.net to play with someones own map, which is another great reason to get this game.
The way of the game is to gather minerals and gas, which is used to build buildings, purchase units, etc . There are many units you may use for battles, and numerous buildings you may create. Now, most people don't understand how the game uses strategy. You must use the minerals and gas you gather, and spend it on what you believe is best for the terrain you are on, the enemies you are facing, and much, much more.
Graphics in Starcraft are outstanding. You get a nice view from high up, and see all your units from far away. The units look small, but big enough to see them doing some nice action. The terrain in the maps look very detailed, and heroes have nice, unique looks for war. Protoss and Zerg races had a big touch to them and their heroes as the Terrans do too. Blizzard is always great in their art work for games, so never underestimate them, they can do an impressive job.
The audio sound quality in Starcraft is impressive, too. All units have different speeches spoken by different voices, and many sounds from shooting guns, spitting acid, buildings, had their nice touch also. The music fitted in well with the background and terrain, which is a plus, but there wasn't too much music to listen too while you play. There are about two to three songs that can be played on each race, so you hear a lot of repeats, which can be irritating enough to make you turn it off. Overall, the sound backed the music up quite a bit.
Should this game ever get boring? No. There is always something to discover and impress you in Starcraft. You can always form different strategies, build your skills on a different race, and experience the skills of gamers around the world on Battle.net. So, remember that there is always going to be action that you will enjoy non-stop.
Now, the question is, Should you buy this game? My recommendation is to definitely buy it without hesitation. This game is absolutely amazing, with great gameplay, outstanding graphics, entertaining sound & music quality, and also strong replayability in the game. I guarantee you won't get bored of it, because there is always action in this game for you to experience, and you won't experience it until you give it a try! So, buy it now, and you will not regret it.
