MechWarrior 2: Ghost Bear's Legacy
Review by DeathXI
"The Legacy of Clan Ghost Bear!"
Introduction:
Welcome to the world of Battletech, in this case, Mechwarrior 2. You're here because as a member of the clans you have just graduated from your sibko class, and are ready to take your Trial of Combat to become a mechwarrior. As is the dream of any clansman, a warrior is the highest class you can possibly be. Succeed here, and that is what you will become, fail, and we will cast you into the lower castes, Scientist, Tech, Or even the lowly laborer you freebirth.
Mechwarrior is a game with a history, unlike most games of it's time, it has a decent storyline, and a DEEP history, especially if you've read some of the books, or any information on it.
The Basic history of this game is that ages ago, Kerensky left Earth because he didn't like how it was, so he took a bunch of his most trusted army people, and led an Exodus. After traveling for many light years, he come across a group of planets and set up a new civilization there. That also failed and his son led another exodus and formed a new civilization again, and later came back and conquered his Fathers. The civilization that worked is what you see before you, 20 separate clans, a military civilization. Since the time, 3 clans are gone: One was destroyed for helping bandits, and two were absorbed by other clans. The current main Powers in the clans are Ghost Bear (not in this game) Wolf, and Jade Falcon.
GamePlay: You play as a Warrior in Clan Ghost Bear. The gameplay itself is good for it's time, but by todays standards not as great. You pilot a Giant BattleMech, and blow things up, including other BattleMechs, there are over a dozen mechs to choose from, although you can't always take any, due to weight restrictions It's rather fun, once you get used to the old controls, and I give it a 8/10 for it's time, 6/10 for todays standards.
Story: This story takes place after the Truce of Tukkayid, around year 3058. No other official BattleTech product tells this story. You are a Ghost Bear trainee, and you have just passed your Blooding (trial to become a Mechwarrior), when...Graphics/Sound: Back in the day, these were great, today, they're not all that good. Overall I'd give them a 8/10 back then, 5/10 today.
Play Time/Replayability: I can play this game over, and over, and over again. I'm still playing to this day. This game requires a semi-significant time requirement, and is great, i give it a 10/10.
I recommend you get this game if you ever see it.
Overall Score: 9/10
