Battlefield 1942

Review by trikitiger

"A Classic in the Online MultiPlayer FPS"

Now, I know some people hate this game, and I know people love it to death. This game is a great game for FPS, new players of the game gain skill quickly as the learn tricks from other players and even the AI when set to a higher level. I love the feel of my sub woofer at my feet giving the biggest rumble when an enemy vehicle explodes! Ahh, let me just separate this out so that you can find out some reasons why this is the best Online MultiPlayer FPS.
This is my first review so don't yell at me for how I did this, I've never written one before.

Graphics: 6/10
Ok, the graphics aren't the best, the walls are paper thin and there's a lot of glitches that allow you to see through objects. Of course as you get more and more expansion packs, the graphics increase, but you can still see some of the polygons in the other soldiers. There isn't much to say but this, most of the weapons and bullets (when slow enough) look like what they're supposed to be, though the real big downer in graphics is that you can see edges on hills, the grass doesn't look that real, and the water is thin, but it does give the blue tint when you look through it. Also when regular gun bullet (from pistols and such) you can see yellow lines of where the bullet is going, if it's missing you, it's good for when you want to take evasive action, but I doubt that in the real WW2 the bullets didn't look like that. This isn't the Graphically best game, but it makes up in other departments.

Sound/Audio: 8/10
You get a lot of sound choices... Well, sort of... If you're into music and can't tell the difference in a pitch easily, you can hear the difference in a fast gun (Assault, Medic) Than a slow gun (colt) or a Bazooka. You get the battlefield theme over and over and over until you start playing, that is the ONLY downside to this. Why do I say only? You can play Napster, ITunes, RealPlayer, any music while you're playing (just have them cued up in your library), and you can mute the battlefield Music. It's not really smart to have sounds muted, really, my brother plays with no sounds, and you can never tell when a person's shooting at you, if you hear a gun firing you know you have to high-tail it, but if you don't, when are you going to know when to fire back? This game pretty much makes you play with sounds.

Game play and Controls: 9/10
I love the game play, but there's one problem. First what's good about this. The Game play gives you hardcore battling, you have to be sneaky to kill your opponent and know more than him. There's only one downside but it only depends on what server you're playing in, and that's camping, or bombarding, people will bomb the main base until they get scores of up to 40, easily, in some servers it's against the rules to do that, but they don't even notice it. I'm not saying admin of those servers are stupid, but it's really hard to get out of a base, when you have up to 16 explosions to dodge. Other than that, you can go into any vehicle, kill that vehicle with virtually anything, and any vehicle can kill. You can run over people! That's fun, but now, when all the players know the tricks, they'll most likely move outta the way.
They have the controls space out about the keyboard. You can crush them in a little space if you desire that, but I like the defaults the best. And now the WORST of the Controls... The planes... (Bum bum bummmmm!) Planes are difficult to maneuver with the mouse, moving the mouse sensitivity all the way down causes you to frantically move the mouse down, pick it up, slam it down again and then move the mouse down again. Moving it towards the top will make it so hard to maneuver, that just touching the mouse will change your direction. Now, I'm an ace at mouse flying, because I've had so much time to practice, but others haven't. So take my advice and fly with a Joystick! It makes things a whole lot easier.

Maps: 9/10
OMG OMG OMG! You don't think these maps are real!?!? I had to watch a ton of WW2 history channel segments! When I saw the Market Garden bridge, I'm like "WOW!" not out loud, of course. Omaha Beach, wow, Aberdeen, WOW (Yes, Aberdeen is a TRUE battle), and a whole ton of others. Now, if all these maps are that realistic, why the 9? There's some flaws with the maps. I doubt that the air carriers in Coral Sea weren't moving when they launched the planes to make the greatest air battle of all time in the pacific. I doubt that Omaha beach was that crowded, though the difficulty of getting to those upper bases is a true thing. And I hate Battle-Axe! That place is so crowded! But the only way to make the best attacks is to go through the barren area on the left of the map. That is the ONLY thing I hate about these maps, other than that they're fine, and if you say that a battle map isn't true, I can turn you straight around to the facts. Of course, none of the maps are going to be a perfect likeness of a battle, but they're VERY close. You can tell the designers put a lot of effort and research into this.

So, what is it? Buy or Rent this game?
Battlefield is a great game to own! If you don't have the money though, go for the renting, but when you do rent it, you wouldn't want to give the game back! They put a great Replay Value on this game and you can meet a lot of people! Umm, I don't think I should put a pun here... Anyways, Buy this game, get the necessary patches, and you don't need all the other Expansions.

Extra (doesn't count for rating)
Ok, an Extra Section. Why an Extra Section? I just want to say a few things here. Battlefield helped me ace my test on the WW2 unit in my school, I had to mostly say battles, but it was every battle I played, Aberdein, Omaha, Kursk, and so on. Also there's a lot of mods you can download, like, the Star Wars mod for the Star Wars fans, and there's a new Vietnam mod (puts trees everywhere). Also, the expansion packs are pretty useless, I have fun with just the original maps, plus Battle of Britain and Coral Sea, but if you want more players to play with because of the higher expansions, go ahead. One warning here, since each server is different the rating changes, one server you might have a guy faking he's "doing it" and another you might have some people your age and talking about life, you never know, so just be warned that not all servers are on the safe rated T (for violence) side. Dialog changes, the graphics and sounds don't
