Septerra Core: Legacy of the Creator
Review by Ashelbane
"A cool AMERICAN made rpg game. Geez, how often can you say that?"
I would like to say that there are, of course, people who don't like this game.
Story: 10
Cool! A non-cliche RPG! Basically, you are Maya of Septerra, a very, very, very odd planet... On the planet, there are seven continents, and they all float above eachother. Each place is known as a Shell, and in the middle is the Core, which holds the gift of the creator. BTW, the rotation turns a "spire" which generates magic energy quite like clockwork. Weird.
Graphics: 9
The graphics are really quite good considering the time it was released. The people are animated fairly well <except for the Magi> and though, as quite a few people have complained, it only goes to 640x480 resolution, that is because that is what they had when it was created. The faces need some work, but they are not as bad as some other games, considering they actually move like normal people do.
Gameplay: This will be divided into BATTLE and NONBATTLE
Battle: 10
I loved Chrono Trigger, and I like Final Fantasy. This is a mixture of Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy. God has blessed us! Instead of Random Battles, you see monsters and can try to avoid 'em. If you are seen, you move to an open area and DUKE IT OUT! You have bars which control if you can attack, and also which moves you can use; i.e. levels 7-9 are the laste bar. However, you can also use magic, powered up by how high the bar has gotten. This adds strategy to the game.
Nonbattle: 9
Basically, if you have played a point-and-click adventure game like Beneath a Steel Sky (now freeware, go get it!) you can play this, though it is in a much bigger place which looks a bit like it was designed by the Chrono Cross team, not a bad thing at all I might add. Also, if you have played, well, Chrono Chross or any other RPG with no funny camera angles, you can play this game. Easy. I just was kind of annoyed taht it did not say in the manual "hold shift to run," so a 9 instead of 10.
Sounds and Music: 7
The music is OK, though a bit repetitive (it's an RPG, what do you expect) but the sounds are quite annoying... ARGH. For example, the attacks have sounds. Different sounds. Yay. Sadly, When you do a level seven attack, all the normal people charge up. It sounds the same. And it sounds bad.
Of course, you can turn it off.
