Soulbringer
Review by Elemaster55
"Gods, this game is good..."
Intro: So my mom got me and by brother those two-in-one bargain bin games one Christmas. I got a cheesy Frankenstein (with Tim Curry...he also did Frank N. Furter...odd) and a mummy game. My brother got Planescape: Torment (the big name) and Soulbringer (the unheard of). We originally didn't do much with Soulbringer, because A.) moving can be difficult, and B.) you die easier. Anyhow, here's my review...
Story: 7/10
Pretty good, but stereotypical. Nameless hero goes to see uncle. Uncle has you do deeds, and you learn you are , for lack of a better term, "The Chosen One" (not actually said, but close enough). The locales are awesome, and you get to do cool stuff.
Control: 7/10
Simple. You can program it so that you swing your sword twice, swap to a bow, shoot an arrow, and cast Fireball. How cool is that? Menu system's pretty good, make sure that you have the brightness up to see the armor-paper-doll. Movement is a bit shaky, literally, but you get by.
Graphics: 7/10
It's a bit grainy, but you'll get used to it. All the main characters have pictures that go with them...that's pretty cool.Side effects are gorgeous. For instance, at one point there is a mural on the ground depicting a spears-man fighting a vampire (do a google image search for Soulbringer...first thing you'll find.) Also, the main character changes outfits as he goes on, from clothes to armor, bearskins to desert garb.
Sound/Music: 10/10
PLEASE INSERT DISC 2! That is how you get some of my favorite video game music of all time. I mean, you go into the first boss room, and this deep music plays...awesome. It gets better as you go along.
Gameplay: 9/10
Great replay value. There are many builds you can go, from warrior to magician. Be careful near the beginning, and don't be discouraged if you die a couple of times. This is one game where elevation plays a key role. If you try down-thrusting when below someone, you miss. Other little things make this game great.
Buy or rent?
For the cheap, cheap price of ten dollars, you get both this and Planescape: Torment. If you like RPGs, this is a must-have.
